This is the sixth anime series based on the manga 'Hakaba Kitaro'--which was created in 1959 by Shigeru Mizuki--but it is the first one to carry the manga's actual title. All five previous series (1968-1969, 1971-1972, 1985-1988, 1996-1998, and 2007) were titled 'Gegege no Kitaro'.
The voice actor for Kitaro is the same person who does Son Goku in Dragon Ball
Trump Omoi (the "Yūrakuchō de Tokemasho" singer) is based on Frank Nagai, who sang the 1957 hit "Yūrakuchō de Aimashō".
Episode 6 features two characters based on real people. Moneylender Machamitsu Kyomori is based on industrialist Masamitsu Moriwaki. Singer Tsubame Ōzora is based on Hibari Misora.
The three lead seiyu, Masako Nozawa (Kitaro), Isamu Tanonaka (Medama Oyaji), and Chikao Ohtsuka (Nezumi Otoko) reprise the roles that they played in GeGeGe no Kitaro from 1968-1972.
