Masterforce is the first Transformers series with absolutely no links to the American toyline. The brand new direction of the story reflects this change.
Despite the appearance of Ginrai, and confusion caused by the Star TV dub, Ginrai is NOT Optimus Prime. The "Big Book of Masterforce" OVA explains why Ginrai looks simiar to the Prime, claiming that the transcector Ginrai used was originally intended to revive Optimus Prime before it was stolen by Devil Z.
Based on the Powermasters and Pretenders toyline in the U.S.
In episode 24, the movie director is a parody of Sam Peckinpah, the director of the 1978 movie "Convoy". "Convoy" in turn inspired the creation of the toy Optimus Prime.
