Darjeeling's recital of the lines "The long sobs of the violins of autumn, wound my heart with monotonous languor", are verses from the poem 'Chanson d'automne' (Autumn Song), written by French poet Paul Verlaine in the 19th Century. The exact lines were broadcast as code words by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in the Second World War to the French Liberation, both indicating the start of the Allied landings at Normandy, and as a signal to begin sabotage operations against the Germans.

"Operation Mifune", the term used by the Rabbit Team's commander Azusa Sawa in reference to their act of destroying a ferris wheel to make it roll on the ground, is a nod to the character Toshiro Mifune from the Steven Spielberg movie '1941', which also had said character perform a similar stunt with a ferris wheel. The movie itself makes an animated appearance as the film the girls of Rabbit Team were watching before the final match.

At the 48:45 mark Miho sales for home in an Imperial Japanese Navy armoured cruiser of the Kasuga class, which consisted of the name ship and the IJN Nisshin. Designed and built by Italy they were first sold to Argentina then on-sold to Japan where they entered service in 1904. Both ships played a prominent role in the war against Russia, participating in the Battle of the Yellow Sea (1904) and the Battle of Tsushima (1905).
