How many episodes was this getting again?

I just realized that the OP only covers events up to Volume 2, so if it's only 13 episodes then this is a graduate of the Rokka School of LN Adaptation Pacing.

That disappoints me because of all of the stuff we won't see, but I'm also happy that the story events aren't being rushed. Far better to be Rokka than Antimagic, after all.

Sounds decidedly Mechwarrior / Battletech in approach. Not a bad thing, but you do need to have a very technical bent.

I have sometimes wondered what a Mechwarrior Clanner would think of emojis.

I'm not a super big mech/robot fan myself, but I definitely enjoyed the first three episodes of Heavy Object. Quenther and Havia's friendship drew me in, the action is grounded but exciting, plus Milinda is cute.

It's scheduled for 24 episodes but a split cour is most likely given the time slot. So far, I actually enjoy this show with the fair pacing but it can definitely be a series that some others don't given the amount of exposition from the pilot episode.

24 episodes. I'd say we're looking to get 4 volumes adapted.

As for the review itself, I honestly think the anime looks and sounds kinda bad. Especially the CG explosions. I also seemed to have forgotten how corny the dialogue really is. Still find it really fun though.

This show is not bad. Its also way to technical for me to actually enjoy the experience of watching it. The act of making a stupid plan that miraculously destroys a mech the size of a mountain is pretty neat. But this show has so far prioritized planning over execution. That does not make for very engrossing TV. I will keep watching only because I literally have to, but this really isn't my kind of mech show. Let's get some Mazinkaiser up in here!

Qwenthur and Havia aren't heavily armed badasses fighting for king and country; they're just a couple of average enlisted guys trying to make it home in one piece.

... and save the girl. Don't forget that.

One thing I kind of liked about the personalities involved is that neither of the guys really seem to have any kind of romantic or lustful inclination towards the princess even though they are aware of her sex appeal. They are thinking of her as a comrade worth risking their lives for. At least for now. There might be some gooey stuff later.

I'm not a big fan of battle-mech shows but this one seems different enough to keep watching.

No matter what's happening on screen, my eyes are always drawn to those stupid looking shoulder........things. They don't look like they serve any purpose and would only hinder a person's arm movement and would seriously get in the way anytime you try to carry something over your shoulder.

Also, why on earth would Qwenthur not tell Havia what he did to the turbines ahead of time? I can understand not reporting it on their emergency signal. There's no way for them to know who's intercepting the signal so you don't want the enemy to know. But Havia is literally standing right next to him and he can't be bothered to give him a quick heads-up about what he's got planned?

This show is so far borderline for me. If this was a stronger season and I was watching more shows, then I'm not sure I'd continue with it. But I'm watching less than I typically watch this season so I'll stick with it for now.

Is it just me, or does Baby Magnum make you think or the Technodrome from TMNT?

I didn't really see any good time for him to tell him. He was too busy actually doing it to explain what he was doing in the repair shop. They were running for their lives and dropping C4 after that. Then they had to call for reinforcements over a possibly unsecured line. He could have explained after that, but if he had, the whole plan would've been shot by being overheard by the soldiers he was unaware of. After that there was no opportunity, since they were being watched and guarded and guards kind of frown on prisoners whispering to each other in front of them. They let them talk out loud, but they weren't saying anything suspicious then.

For me, every episode has improved. I didn't hate the exposition in the first episode, but I did hate the can't touch the boobs scene. The second episode was better, and the third was pretty damn good. There still seems to be a disconnect between the carefree tone of the protagonists and the horrors of war theme, but if they continue to improve like this, I can live with it.

Right now my main objection is the cartoonish villains. And the repeated threats of raping of Milinda feel like some kind of weird fan service when they can't work in a boob grab. :/

It does now that you mention it, but oddly enough for me the name and shape conjure up Baby Huey for some reason. Smile

Baby Magnum reminds me more of an Giant Battlemech transporter Ship. They also are shaped like an Gigantic Sphere. That could also explain why this Anime here is well recived in USA. Its near to US battlemech universe Army

I was looking forward to this. I like mech shows in general and the name Heavy Object has a lot of appeal for me. I played Battletech, MechWarrior, and even had some stuff for Robotech (never played it though) way back in the day. Really, I don't find this show technical. Verbose yes, technical not really. Wordy shows don't bother me either. Poor exposition and dialogue on the other hand, which is on display here, do grate. The only thing I've liked is some of the visuals. I like that Baby Magnum is this giant sphere bristling with weapons. Heck I like the name of it too. Character designs feel a little generic for my tastes, but is not a big turn off. I like that there is the possibility of some depth background wise in this series. I just don't think its been displayed that greatly so far.

The show may smooth out in the long run, but for now I'll be putting it on hold and see if down the road response is favorable enough to warrant a second chance.

The visuals are very nice to look at, but the explosion effects are something else Smile

Is it just me, the shitty FUNi video quality, or is the CG in this show just kind of awful? It's like to the level of Macross Frontier, barely.
