All of Miyazaki's film plots except princess mononoke and castle of cagliostro sound boring, but they all turn out to be excellent films. This hopefully will be no exception.

Yeah the idea of a lost flying island, a girl with a magic stone being chased by pirates and the army sounds pretty boring to me.

i think that his story lines r fantastic. Not only r they beautifuly created, but have true underlying meaning. And the artwork as well, r just beautifuly done, including the characters and backgrounds. Miyazaki can really push the anime arts to its fullest. this could be y this movie alone is on 1 of 6 screens in japan.

One little grain of salt to keep in mind about that figure is that there are far fewer screens per capita in Japan than in North America: in 2002, the United States had 35804 screens (35170 indoor screens and 634 drive-in screens; source: Plunkett Research), and most films in wide release are lucky to reach 10% of those. (For comparison, The Incredibles last weekend was on 3933 screens, which is just 10.98% of the 2002 screen total, or a little below 1/9th, and that's probably skewing a little high since I believe the screencounts at BoxOfficeMojo.com include Canada.)

You are mixing up your statistics there.

The number you are quoting from BoxOfficeMojo.com is actually the number of theatres that it is playing in. Keep in mind that with a big movie, such as the Incredibles, it'll play on multiple screens at once.

So taking a number from Plunkett Research, there are a total of 6,112 movie theatres in the USA (5,712 regular plus 400 drive-in). Last week, the Incredibles played in 3,933 theatres, or 64% of all the theatres in the United States. The average theatre in the USA has roughly six (actual average: 5.86)screens total based off of the Plunkett numbers. If a movie such as The Incredibles did play at only one screen at each of those theatres, then it would be 10.98%, but with the multiple screens at larger theatres, I would suspect that 1/6 is not out of the realm of plausability.

No, when BOM says "theatre", I think they mean the individual rooms and not the entire cinema complex, since the theatre counts at BOM are identical to the screen counts at the IMDb.

EDIT: Oh, I see the studios actually rarely give out the screen count since the theatre count looks better on paper. I guess the IMDb just uses theatre count when screen count is not available...

These sites are likely interchanging theatres and screens when they should not be. Take for example Matrix Reloaded, which was on 8,517 screens on its opening, or 23% of all screens. The 8,517 was simply a reel count and did not count any interlocking to show the film on multiple screens with one copy. The actual theatre count was 3,603 theatres. (Source: BoxOfficeMojo)

I bought my 5 tickets today, my family's coming to visit me for Thanksgiving so I'm dragging them all to see it, regardless of my meager Japanese language skills or their complete lack therof.

Lawsons' is selling this giant statue-like thing of the castle, I may buy one and ship it home...

Really? I haven't noticed any around here. I'll have to keep my eye out. What I want are the promotional flags that Lawson's has been flying outside their stores. This reminds me, I need to get my tickets soon.

Just a quick question, do any of you Japanese members know how long Howl's Moving Castle will play. I'm going to visit my mom in Tokyo during the Christmas season and I want to make sure it will be played.

I love Miyazaki. Sure some of the stories are boring, but his visuals are breathtaking.

A quick note. If you have a chance to go to Japan. I highly recommend the Ghibli Musuem. The Japanese are limited to 300 tickets a day (I think) while the foreign guest can get a ticket with relative ease (sometimes).

refresh my memory about Lawson's. This is a drug store chain like Watson's right? Is Mos Burger is a burger joint from Tokyo?

I can't wait to see the movie.

Howls Moving Castle seems a little boring. I mean, i love fantasy; witches, wizzards, dragons, adventures [its apart of all societys and comes from religions/mythologys. (who cant like that?)]. But Howls. is based on, if i am reading this right, an old lady. Not to be prejudice, but it dosen seen to relate to me or seem to have any thing that interests me.

I'm more into the fantasy that has people around 20-100x and is a live action movie.(and the books are good to- A wizzard of Earthsea?)

so...um.....unless anyone can give me a really, really good reason to go see it, please, tell me.

I've yet to see a Miyazaki film that was boring, but that might be because of my age and interests. Wink

Go read the book. It'll take you about 3 hours, if that, to read. It's a Young Adult novel, without pictures (unlike that silly manga stuff), so I'm sure you'll have plenty to relate to.

It's not based on an old lady but rather spoiler[the young girl gets cursed and is turned into an old lady. The story is about her adventures while trying to get herself turned back to normal. ]

Saw it on Saturday night in Shibuya with my family in tow (parents, younger sister, grandmother). Sister hated it, parents at least appriciated the cultural value, grandmother loved it. Of course, keep in mind that I'm the only one of us who can understand any Japanese (and even so I only managed to pick out words and phrases).

Excellent, excellent movie. I can't wait for the english adaptation so that I can figure out a couple weird things that I didn't understand, but this is definately another Miyazaki classic.
