One of my favorite series this season. Episode 2 in particular is quite memorable in the second half. And although I think the animation quality feels different, it's easy to get adapted to.

They did cut some parts though but overall quite enjoyable especially with the main leads and the chemistry between certain characters. Great to see SNAFU return tbh.

What is there to really say about Oregairu? That it is the best written light novel out there? That the characters all make the kind of decisions actual isolated teenagers like to make? That this show is great at bringing up memories of every awkward encounter I have ever had? Either way, this is probably the best light novel period, and one of the best high school drama shows I can recall. Give it an A+++ and everyone should watch it.

Oh man, wait until the next few episodes of the show. By then, the show will go from amazing to perfection.

The only problem I have is that Studio Feel might adapt volume 10 of the series. While that is a good thing, it doesn't give a good conclusive end to this season, because what if the show will never get a third season? Oh well, we will just have to wait and see.

Best show of the season for me.

What amazes me most about this show is the sharp contrast between how critics talk about it ("there are constant games of emotional distance, small cruelties of conversation, and well-chosen tiny moments that strongly reflect the day-to-day realities of young loneliness") and how an average Crunchyroll commenter talks about it ("Hachiman is a true hero", "the girls have no right to be mad at Hachiman", "Hachiman is the hero his classmates need, but not the hero they deserve", etc.).

And the inevitable Batman comparisons begin on this thread. Laughing

This show seems very aware of it's internet "audience"

I was thinking this was something I could show my friends if it was actually funny seems more like everything is centered around cynicism and meta jokes focused on anime tropes.

I'm missing how this show garners an A+

I think that's because they are all Hachiman themselves. They need a role model, a hero figure to lie to themselves that their isolation are their strength, to turn away from all those loneliness and hurtful memories. I can't consider it's a good or bad choice of thinking because I even think like that. Not every one of us have someone like Shizuka, Yui, Yukino to understand us. It's not like a show tell us that's wrong and we just go outside and make connection. If we can just do it we aren't loner in the first place. Well it's life anyway, everyone is going to hurt you. You just got to find the people worth suffering for.

This show always amazes me in how well written its characters are. Hachiman, Yui and Yukino are simple teenage characters yet complex at the same time, representing the struggle, misunderstandings and overall way of thinking many teenagers in their situation would go through. Characters like Hayama, who at the very beginning was nothing more than the "hot guy", gained a lot of depth once the show went on... heck, even Ebina, a character represented by the fujoshi trope and nothing else, gained depth on the 2nd season.

Really, just like Nick, there are many, many things to say about SNAFU. Just too much.

...however, I'd appreciate if some comedy was added to chapter 4, at least to ease part of the tension. Seeing Hachiman digging himself deeper into a hole, Yukino being fair and unreasonable at the same time because of her black-and-white views, and Yui just suffering because she can't do anything to help them IS heavy, after all.

EDIT: Also, what's with the opening change? I liked the first one, but the second one feels... weird. I mean, I can appreciate more animation being put into it... but was it just me, or many of the animation segments were in fast-forward?

I would like to add that the first season of the anime was framed more to pander to otakus: It's more light-hearted and fast paced, there was much more typical scenes and tropes reminiscent of it, and even things like the ED which was Yui and Yukino in sexy poses in wedding dresses. Also, it's easier to appeal them since it was very episodic and the focus wasn't as much in Hachiman's problem as it was in the other characters that he tried to help, instead of now that he is the real focus and his flaws are more apparent than ever.

In fact, I'll say it's surprising that knowing the public who bought so much material, and that this sequel has much better animation, is however much more serious and reducing the pandering (the new OPs and EDs are very representative of it in comparison), it doesn't happen often. Also, I don't remember Hachiman's voice when he talks being this low in the previous season (which contrasts with when he thinks, and probably to reflect better the different attitudes he has when speaking to people).

However, although I appreciate what this new direction is doing, in some ways I miss a little of the energy and comedy of the previous season, it's not like it's gone but it feels a little like Tokyo Ghoul and Root A and I don't like such big differences of tone for something that is supposed to be a continuation. Maybe I'll get used to it or it's just because this is a more serious conflict that requires less comedy coming from them.

First of all, I just want to say how happy I am and grateful that this show got covered for it's second season. I was very worried it wouldn't get covered because Carl Kimlinger left and I thought he was the only one of the staff to have seen the first season. Plus I had the impression that people would walk on by thinking this show was just another typical romantic comedy/harem show like the hundreds out there. It surpasses a lot of expectations and breaks some of the mold that's stuck there. So thank you Nick for covering this.

Now as for the second season so far. One word: "Damn." The upgrade to animation and art design is very clear and present, the body language done by the characters is spot on. It was the best choice to switch to a new studio for this season, I mean, just watching Hikki walk and seeing his clothes move alongside him is brilliant (never have I seen so much detail put into the ankles of the pants above the shoes move so smoothly). I love the OP and ED, music's an important thing for me. Especially the Opening song, Nagi Yanagi never fails to impress me.

As for the Hikki himself, it's definitely hard to watch the friendships he actual has slowly become more distant, even more so since he doesn't realize that he does have people close to him that care. He does not like superficiality and the relationships that Hayama has are shallow and worth protecting. He hates it but he was given a job to do as well as an indirect request from Hayama to protect the status quo. Yukino watching him do what he did in episode 2 shows that she can't approve of such methods not just because of your ideals or perspective of the world but because Hikki chose the most effective method to getting the end result despite it rebounding on him. Hikki doesn't like his methods either but he is proud of the achievement from finishing the job he is given.

I didn't like what Yukino's sister did in episode 3, even if she didn't know she should have seen Hikki's expression that he clearly didn't want to be there nor take what was going on. And yet, she plays the Devil's Advocate and furthers the pain for him by asking about his past as well as inviting Hayama to hang out with them, further prolonging the torture.

Hopefully episode 4 will deliver some kind of salvation for him and for the others two. the heading for the preview of episode 4 shows that Yui is going to do something, and I really hope it saves her friends.

This season is a heck of a lot better than the first one. And the latest episode (the third of season two) is easily the best one in this franchise thus far. It made for a fantastic twenty-four minutes of storytelling and character-development.

While I'm really fond of the ending of episode 2, but this latest episode (3) feels too exaggerated and overdramatic for me.
(Yuigahama's character interpretation is especially a frequent example since the beginning of the show.)

It's nothing to do with Hikigaya or some quiet scenes in the episode, though, which I still really liked. It's more about Yukinoshita who's kind of experiencing an out-of-character treatment. I'm not sure it may be just me, in eps 2 near-ending she said her objection on Hikigaya's method in her coolness as usual, but in this episode, I think she got emotional over it too suddenly, or that in one scene, her expression is animated to exaggeratedly in showing her emotions, imo, to the point that it feels out-of-character.

I don't really remember how it was in season 1, but this season and its all-new polished look seems to underlines its 'outside appearance' that it outshines what's inside.
I think it tries too hard to convey the emotion to (or maybe to please) its audience, while I personally preferred the emotional part to stay implied/open, which works really well on Ebina's character in the end of episode 2. Maybe it's too much expectation for this show, though.

got a wince from me, as did the whole “I texted you, and waited for your response” monologue at the donut shop.

As I wrote on the anime thread I suspect that he actually had the wrong address.

But I am going to cut Hachiman some slack here. The way he was treated at the donut shop was nothing short of a nightmare. Not only does the past crush disregard him over and over again ("he never said a thing to me") ("no way you could associate with someone like him") ("no way could he be involved with a girl. ha ha") she does it in such a way that makes it pretty clear that she isn't even trying to be malicious but that he is such a nonentity that it wouldn't even be worth the effort.

How many different ways can you tell a guy he is about as desirable as the dogshit she scraped off the bottom of her shoe? And from his expression you can see that every offhand comment like that gets to him no matter how much he would deny it.

Some of it may be self inflicted. And although the girl could have been more gracious or consider it I wouldn't blame her. (after all a middle-schooler) But if Hachiman has generated a shell around himself I would say he has good reason and further it is pretty unrealistic to expect him to break it himself.

I don't think so. He says (and we're also shown, albeit briefly), that he did ask for her email address after he confessed. If he REALLY had the wrong address, then that would be even more horrible, as it'd mean that the girl gave her another address on purpose.

This has been on my mind too, I have seen quite a lot of people making him out to be a hero that the girls have no right to interfere with. While before I thought he did something brave that made things better for other as a sacrifice, it is now that I am seeing what the real problem is. Hachiman is not invincible, and he is not only hurting himself, but the people who care about him getting hurt.
