I had my eyes set on this one. Heroic Legend of Arislan (which was how it was spelled on the UK VHS tape I bought) was the second anime title I ever bought, and I followed up with buying the following volumes up to its abrupt end. Well, not "end" end, but... you know what I mean.
During that time, I grew to respect the Prince as a character, and, as such, enjoyed the anime a great deal despite its unfinished state.
I find it interesting that the manga version here is less about pretty boy designs and more like... I dunno, Vinland Saga? Of course, I only have the cover art to go on with that statement for now, but I think I'll amend that pretty soon, so I'll get to see for myself what it looks like.

As someone who has never seen the OVA to judge off of I have to say I've enjoyed what I've read so far (which may be a bit past this volume)
I think I mostly went into this wanting to see Arakawa draw action again but the narrative itself really feels alive enough for me to want to keep reading. I can see why Arakawa is involved with it.

Actually, Vinland Saga is a good comparison for how Arakawa handles the visuals. There are some moderately visceral scenes of the Parsian army being immolated, bloody deaths, etc that give it much grittier feel.

I enjoyed reading the first book.

Same here. Though like Northlander I once saw the OVAs in my case, one of the reasons I wanted to see this new version was to see Arakawa do action again and I agree things did a good job of coming alive in the first book. I hope they continue building up well in the next.

There is actually an old manga version of the novels out there. It was also really good.
I bought this volume and added it to my pile to get to. Arslan Senki is wonderful, please watch the OAVs if you can! I'm not a huge fan of Arakawa's art but it's not really important. What's important is how amazing a story it is.
