Poppy Hill actually appears to be more 50/50 love/hate than Earthsea. Earthsea's the real underdog, even though it's enjoyable for what it is, as long as you recognize that Goro had nothing to do with what works.

I must admit that the name "Kevin Seymour" didn't ring an immediate bell, but I do admit that I've seen & enjoyed some of his work:
Ninja Scroll & Ghost in the Shell (the original movie) were some of the earliest anime movies I saw when I was first really entering my time as a full-on "anime fan", and I saw them via their great dubs, & Seymour's English dub for the Bastard!! OVA is probably a highly underrated dub. Daran Norris (yes, Cosmo from The Fairly Oddparents) delivered an excellent Dark Schneider that easily stood up with Kazuki Yao's original performance, same with Steven Blum's Gara, and know I understand that Seymour's penchant for perfection is likely the main reason why that dub was such a joy to listen to. He also directed the dub for PS2 video game The Bouncer, which had a great English cast as well. A really great episode here & it makes me wish I saw more of his work & knew more about this man. |

When I was just getting into anime in the early 2000's, a lot of the most enjoyable dubs I listened to were from Animaze, and they were the name I associated with the best for quite a while. Even compared to other LA studios with a similar talent pool, they seemed a notch above the rest. It's a shame Pioneer pretty much mostly quit using them for new dubs only a few years after I started, and Bandai tended to save them for their biggest titles. I kind of missed getting them for a good cutesy comedy like Hand Maid May. That one also stood out as a rather impressive dub with a "purist" approach. Even had the characters pronounce the Japanese "r" sound, but didn't sound awkward to me and was really enjoyable to listen to on top of that (and Seymour had a fun comedic role as Commando-Z in it under an uncertain alias). Metropolis was probably one of the earliest (for me) dubs that I heard that he directed himself (may have heard some of Big O before that too), and that one stands out particularly memorably with some of my favorite VA's of the time.
Very happy to see ANNCast do a podcast on him. It was great to hear about all he had done. Interesting to get a bit of a clarification on the Animaze/ZRO Limit/Magnitude 8 thing as that was something I was always rather curious about myself. |

Wow. What a shame you didn't have a chance to interview Kevin Seymour for ANNCast, but good that you got a long-time associate on to tell us about him and his role in US Anime history. That Miyazaki/Moebius story was gold --- imagine how many more stories like that there were.
These oral-history podcasts you're doing are great things. Thanks! |

Yes a great loss that you didn't get the chance to interview Kevin Seymour before his death I loved Ghost In The Shell, Ninja Scroll, Perfect Blue, Armtrage 3, Metropolis and I watch Akria on the Cartoon Network. Just wish I could rent Akria in a video store to heard the original Japanese voice actors.

You should really have a link to his encyclopedia page in the description because some people are too lazy, especially if you tell people to visit it.

Kevin worked briefly for Studiopolis where he directed the dub of Kekkaishi in its entirety its his last swan song to the english dubbed world. The most impressive dub Kevin ever directed in my opinion was the re-dub of Akira its a 14 year old dub and it still sounds excellent to this day. Its a shame he wasn't able to direct more dubs before his passing.

How did he die out of curiosity if anyone knows?
