Huh?
You mean that there is enough demand for an Anime in US theaters to make the distributor think it would be a good idea to delay the release on home video?
Will wonders never cease?

Yeah right. I think Funimation is full of crap. I rather watch the movie at my home in BD rather than go to a run down theater in the sketchy part of town. And I was getting my money ready to buy the third and first two movies this February.

Really?
I understand that extending the theater runs will add more revenue (as this will add more $$ from more tickets sold, in addition to everyone who's gonna buy the BD/DVD), but they better be adding a good deal more theaters. I was really excited to see 3.33 Dubbed in February, so I hope that somewhere around me will get it.

So, I guess you can redo.
Was there some survey they put out that I missed? Something that told them there was "overwhelming theatrical demand"? Cause I guess I missed it. It seems odd that after its up for pre-order then they figure out that there's demand for it. And then its to be determined when the release will happen? They don't know how long they are going to run it in the theaters? It feels like a little bit of sloppy planning. Well, I'm not interested in seeing it in a theater, so I guess I'm not part of the "overwhelming" demand.
I guess I'll just have to wait longer and I can deal with that. Hopefully, they will give us a quick update when we can expect the BD/DVD release so people can adjust their expectations easier. However, it will be disappointing (and suspicious) if it turns into a several month delay though.

I find it hard to believe that there could be THAT much demand for it when they use such a horrible theatrical distribution system like Eventful.

Yeah, just seems like they poorly planned the theatrical & physical releases too close together to me.
Already canceled my pre-order, which the money is going towards a Sentai release in Feb/March now. Probably will now just pick it up whenever Amazon has a sale on it eventually.

Lame for those who can't watch in the theater. Not too smart to me truthfully.

So, they plan things badly and decide to punish those NOT attending theatrical showings because of their poor planning. Did those Madoka numbers in the US lead to this change or is it just bad decision making? Well regardless, I can't see this doing anything productive. Granted, I have no idea how their internal affairs work for this kind of shit, but... I mean you're grasping at straws for the people who really wanted to see the film at this point and with this decision, might have lost out on money 'and' pissed off some of your fans who were patiently awaiting this release. Now, either they're just gonna pirate it cause they can't wait any longer or say 'screw this' and go buy something else. Decisions like this typically don't build good PR is all...

I was under the impression that the theatrical showings of this only happened when enough people "preordered" tickets, as was the case for Wolf Children. So I was thinking that releasing the BD wouldn't matter as enough theater viewers had already committed. Then I went back through ANN and saw that Eva 3.33 appears to be distributed in theaters the "traditional" way, not the "Tugg" way.
Is this a sign that the crowdsourced funding of Wolf Children was successful enough to inspire a more massive "normal" theatrical release?
Who knows, this might actually come to a theater near me. The only anime film that I've gotten around here has been the live action Gantz movie.

Funimation probably only has a limited number of film prints or hard drives of the film, so when more theaters asked to screen the movie, they have to wait after the previous theaters are done (they can't all do it at the same time). And it wouldn't help those late theaters in the box office if the home videos are already out, so Funimation delays the home video release. Guess ya could look at this that the theater demand for the film was greater than expected, and that's a good sign for greater acceptance of anime among theaters' bottom line.

Wow.
Well, this gives me more time to prepare over Christmas break: I'm rolling out some videos to explain Rebuild.
Cautiously optimistic about Rebuild 3, but the biggest complaint was just how short it was. Now I'm not sure what Rebuild 4 will do.

Even as I'm glad it's getting more exposure via cinematic showings, part of me can't help but twitch since I already PO'd my copy on DVD.
