As a Patlabor fan, I'm nervously looking forward to this live-action series. ^^; I love the fact that Shigeo Shiba will be there. Izumino? Gotoda? Heh... ^^; Shiobara Yuuma vs. Shinohara Asuma? 9_9 A Russian this time, rather than an American. Hmm... This is both fun and weird at the same time. ^^;;;;

No Noa, Kanuka or Shinobu-san? It really is a new beggining for Patlabor. I'm cautiously interested in how it will transfer to live action.

I'll miss the old cast, but a new cast isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Oshii has already written a novel with this concept. It had me excited until I realized it was new characters with "amusingly" similar names, after which I put it back on the shelf. Sorry, nope, not interested.

I may watch this, since doing so'll be a heck of a lot less trouble than reading a book, but I can't help feeling disappointed that this is the direction they're going with it. I mean, why the teasing with character names? Either give us the characters we love, or give us completely new characters that don't depend on the originals (and hope it works out better than in W-XIII).

Anywho, that's just my preliminary reaction, which will hopefully be proven wrong.

The first nitpicky question is why shut down Section 2 Division 1 and leave Section 2 Division 2? Wouldn't 2 become 1 anyway, if there is only one division? Do they only operate during daytime? What about when labor crimes happen at night? Is only half the division active, with the other left in reserve?

And since Division 2 was the one always causing problems, why leave them?

And in the tv series, there was much hulabaloo that the top brass wanted to replace all the different models of Patos (including the Ingrams) with a single, cheaper model. So in this new series they chose to keep the more expensive model and just cut the other division?

Gah!

This kind of reasoning, most likely.

I'm surprised they opted for a near/alternate future scenario. I guess they wanted some sort of continuity with the original series, but like Dirty Pair, some of that tech didn't carry over into the actual real-world 1999+. Wink

They still have a good track record of getting the job done.

Why change the characters so drastically? It's the characters that made the show.

Probably because the "original" division 2 is long moved on. Nearly everyone had gone on to other pursuits by 2002.

Well, that's boring. Why not just have it take place during Section 2's prime?

Even Patlabor 2, which was more an Oshii film than a Patlabor film (but brilliant) still had Noa, Asuma, and Ohta in it. This one doesn't even have Captain Gotoh.

Not to mention they've clearly cast a lead that provides solely sex appeal.

This still looks like an interesting project, even more so with the lead in of the seven multi-parts made up of episodes 0-12. I was hoping the live-action Patlabor would be based in the original story line and would feature more of the characters from that period, but I don't have a problem with the concept they've envisioned here. I'm curious to see how the story line is expanded. I also took note that the live-action episodes and movie mirror the anime version somewhat in that the series is more "slapstick" based, while the movies were serious. Here's hoping the mecha, including labors and carriers, look just as impressive when they're moving for the live-action version as they do in the anime version.
