That's what they put up?

I was looking through the new stuff on Netflix when I noticed Digimon titles added on. I was like "Wow, they put up that old kid show?" I had no idea they were in original Japanese though.

I might make this a weekend thing...

I assumed it was dub-only. Understandable that the NGV sets where dub-only due to edits, but... does this give us uncut Digimon fans hope that a sub boxset is possible??

EDIT: I see, they put the dub under "Digimon: Digital Monsters" and the sub under "Digimon Adventure".

...I need these boxes and have been waiting over a decade for them Sad I'll even deal with the bad grammar I want them that bad.

Main question here is whether or not the subs themselves are any good. Toei's subtitled Digimon episodes have not had a tidy track record. While Adventure 02 was passable, it still suffered from uneven translation and inconsistent terminology, switching between using the original Japanese and the English dub terms on a whim. If Toei's new upload is at least on par with something like their subs of Fist of the North Star or Slam Dunk, then I'll be fine. Otherwise, go directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200.

EDIT: Just checked episode one, and no, the translation quality has not improved from the last two attempts. Typos abundant, a number of obvious translation errors, inconsistent terminology, incredibly stilted dialogue that is NOT the fault of the original Japanese writers... can't say I'm able to recommend this version. I really hate to say this, but if you're gonna watch Digimon in Japanese, watching fansubs is still your best bet.

It looks like they accidentally uploaded a batch of improper subs and they're going in fixing them. The corrected subs, for the most part, have been fine, even if a little loose. I'd probably wait a bit until they fix them.

Ah. Well, if you'll look at what I posted (I edited my earlier post), it seems that I saw the bad initial subs. I'm glad they noticed their goof-up early, so people don't start making a massive commotion later on down the road.

And "loose" subs aren't a problem at all. As long as you're not changing the fundamental intentions of the dialogue and it gets across the same idea, that's fine. I just hope they don't go overboard with the "loose subs" and end up being something along the lines of, say, the GG Fansubs release of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure or the Commie fansubs of Attack on Titan (I know, I know, bad manners to compare official translations to fansubs, but they're the best examples I can think of ATM).

Yeah, Episode 1's subtitles is still affected, while 2-5 have been fixed up. Not sure how long it's going to take till they fix all the subtitles, however... Episodes 17, 18, and 21, during the initial upload, were already the corrected subtitles, for instance, but I'm unsure how many episodes have proper subs outside the ones I mentioned.

Whoa, well THAT was unexpected. Please, PLEASE someone put this on DVD, since that works better for me on streams. I own the dub set, and plan to get the rest of those, but I would double dip every time for an uncut Japanese version too.

The release marks the first time the Japanese version of first series has been made legally available in the United States.

Pretty sure the Japanese version have been available on the PlayStation Store.

Glad to hear they're fixing them. Watched some later episodes like 39 and some episodes of the "Dark Masters" arc and boy are there some bad lines. "Extreme Stage"? Really? Then in MetalSeadramon's episode you get lines like "You're like a baby, War Grey mon. This is your last!" and then his next line is "What's on your mind!" before he shoots Whamon.

Or Joe being obsessed with finding men.

EDIT: I should point out that, yes, I've seen some of the corrected subtitles, and I do agree that they are far superior to the older ones. Consistent terminology, accurately translated, sentence flow is natural... the new subs are just all-around superb. Can't wait for all of the episodes to be fixed.

Am I the only one who REALLY hopes someone puts out a subbed DVD set after this?

Because yes please.

The most amusing part is that they have removed all reference to "Evolution" in the series and changed it to "Change". I have 3 guesses as to why that may be Wink
