So the OVA will have the English dub, but no English subs, while the movie version will have no English dub, but will have English subs? Kind of odd, don't ya think? Oh well, I'm still excited. Macross Plus in English on Blu-ray, and it won't cost $500+? Count me in.

Considering how terrible the English dub was for the OVA, I'd rather spend my money on the movie without the dub and save money and time.

I'm pretty sure, English subtitles will be included on the disc. They probably just didn't mention it. I hope this is the first move of many for the Production Team or Publisher of Macross video products to include English dubbing and subtitles since the ongoing licensing issue between Big West, Tatsunoko, and Harmony Gold is still unresolved... ultimately freezing any possibility of an licensor from picking up new Macross IP for international release.
The international Macross community are dying to see new Macross stories in a legitimate manner. Also, Macross Plus movie was in Pan & Scan (4:3) on DVD. Does anyone know if the blu-ray will be in 16:9 format? Regards, Samson |

Having it in 16:9 or 1.85:1 would just mean cropping out the tops and bottoms of the image, which has happened to other anime on BluRay, unfortunately. HD doesn't relate to aspect ratio, but the size of the image, being at least 720 vertical pixels. In the case of a 4:3 picture, you'd get a 1440x1080 resolution of image, with two bars on each side that are pure black.
Macross Plus was produced in 4:3, like virtually all non-theatrical anime have been until the last decade or so, so if anything was ever in 16:9, it must have been a crop since they definitely weren't reanimating the non-new footage. I'm guessing it too will be 4:3 like the OVA. It couldn't have been panning or scanning, that's the entire image. Even further on that topic, most widescreen anime has always been either 16:9 or 1:85:1, with remarkably little in any wider format. So even if any older things were in pan&scan, you're not loosing nearly as much image as you would with a 2.35(9):1 format: what you've been seeing in Hollywood films since the 70s. And what's more, a lot of anime films have also been in plain old 4:3, like Crusher Joe and Project A-ko. |

The dub is likely on the OVA because of its popularity among Japanese fans. Years back, it was released in Japan as the International Version.
The addition of subtitles makes me think that Bandai Visual is finally listening to out requests. They rarely ever revise specs to include subtitles. Either way, English or Japanese, my neighbors are going to hate me come the last week of June heh heh. |

The movie is really just a shortened repackaging of the OVA with a few bits added in to keep the fans interested enough to want to watch it. In short, a cash cow. I'll stick with the OVA as the "O" stands for "Original", but ya pay's ya money, ya take's your choice.

I don't get this reasoning. It's usually something like "it doesn't fit my TV!" or some such. You should be complaining equally about movies wider than 16:9, you're losing screen real estate to the black bars on the top and bottom, and I doubt anyone here has bothered to get a 21:9 set. |

Just a personal pet peeve... not sure why pillar boxed bothers me but letter boxed does not... makes no sense as you say. Just reminds me that it comes from another era like the VHS tapes. Edit: though to be honest, watching Skyfall last night even the letter boxing isn't great. Silly I agree... but things that fit the TV do look best IMO. It has kept me from importing Cowbow Bebop. No matter how good it is, just hard for me to look at pillar boxes for that long... |

If I recall correctly, the the Japanese release of the English dub on the International Edition fixed that and has the correct music and sound effects. |
