Really?I thought that people got into anime because of coll sci-fi stories.

I would have to add Tsukimi from Princess Jellyfish to the list. She's incredibly insecure, and the very prospect of interacting with people other than her otaku roommates turns her to stone!

what a coincidence i finished my saki marathon a couple days ago. anyway on the top of my head i cant think of a good shy teen in anime and i never thought momo was shy at all she was really just ignored most of her life and she got with the times and adapted and decided not to talk with anyone until her lo- i meant the president saved her. but still good list none the less. as for the new poll i picked gintoki since he's hilarious during the none action arcs and is a badarse during the action arcs.

Interesting list. Also, am the only one who thought that Nina (Code Geass) was kind of well.... creepy, even before she went all crazy and started humping tables and committing genocide?

Meru re-defines the "pain" in "painfully shy" :3
Also, honorable mention to Megumi from Special A, the one who only communicates through the written word?

Please tell me I'm not the only one who finds "special abilities" like this to be incredibly cheesy.

My interest in anime was through fight / martial arts stories, ie. wuxia. I mean, my gateway anime was Sailormoon, but I really got hooked through Dragon Ball and Rurouni Kenshin.
So I guess that leans more towards fantasy than sci-fi...at least, if a sword can battle a Gatling gun...

Yes that poor, poor Table-kun...
However, I disagree with the article putting her at numero uno partially because of the F.L.E.I.J.A. She may have created it, but she never used it. Even Nunnally has more blood on her hands than Nina.

in a anime where you have a adorable loli who draws her power from the moon, a psychic eye, a girl who gets stronger when she's with her penguin stuff animal and someone who can remember every mahjong game they ever saw then that seems really normal.

Momo probably has one of the most believable power in Saki. But yeah, if you're looking for anything approaching realistic mahjong then you should stay away from Saki. Same as if you want realistic american football and tennis then you should stay away from Eyeshield 21 and Prince of Tennis. Saki is all about being as flashy, silly, and over-the-top as possible during mahjong games so giving the characters powers was just a simple logistical step.
Personally, I never thought of Momo as shy. She was simply unnoticed. When Yumi does finally take notice to her, she is one of the most energetic and boisterous on the Tsuruga team. And she is very outward in her affections for Yumi.

Like everyone else here, I can't really see Momo as shy. She doesn't care for communication with others, so she's satisfied with being ignored. And then she turns it into art, that's all. She doesn't even show any signs of discomfort when in the spotlight during her match when she acknowledges that everyone can see her perfectly through the cameras.
And ironically, unlike what the description in today's list states, Momo had a hard time against an opponent who completely ignores the presence of others, not one who pays them close attention.

I'd have to vote for fantasy. Sci-fi is cool too, but fantasy is where it begins for me.
Nina...god, that girl's freakout face is way too memorable.

Well at least Shinji kind of got a more likable character in the Evangelion manga where he laughs and even jokes. While the depression is still present, he is more openminded. Is the Shinji from the Rebuild of Evangelion series similar?

Am I the only one surprised that Shinji wasn't number one? It seems like the obvious choice to me. I mean c'mon, there's no way he's less shy than Yuki from Haruhi Suzumiya.

....Okay, Saki sounds so ridiculous I almost want to watch it now (I'm a sucker for absurdly over-the-top stuff like TTGL), but having to wade through gratuitous yuri will be a drag (I'm being a rather large hypocrite here, given how I love to add in completely incongruous yaoi subtext in my own writing, but eh).
