Yikes! That's a wee bit of a loss. Wonder what game titles will be affected.

It's my understanding that aren't even going to publish any games in the US that aren't Sonic, Aliens, Total War or Football Manager (never even heard of those last two) for the foreseeable future. That's a real shame because it seems like some of the games they've published have gotten more praise than the games they've been developing themselves the past few years, even if they didn't make that much money. I'm sure losing Marvel's business did a lot of damage to them as well. They had such a great burst of creativity after they first went third party, I wonder what happened. I guess they just couldn't keep up with developing for HD systems and the increasing hostility towards Japanese games

Total War is a RTS series which is quite popular in Europe and Football Manager is a soccer management game which is VERY popular in the UK.

In any case, Sega's Western divisions have sucked ass ever since their parent company pulled out of the hardware market mainly because they can hardly be bothered to market their games at all, especially the ones from Japan and also when they do release decent games in Japan, they either a) release them in the West with minimum or no marketing at all or b) never release them outside Japan at all even though there are people willing to buy them!

In other words, Sega of America and Sega Europe these days are run by a bunch of pussies who aren't willing to take risks unlike the likes of Ghostlight, Aksys and NISA.

Look at it this way, if they end up going under, they'll only have themselves to blame because they didn't adapt to the changing market for videogames.

Big J-companies are losing money these days. At least Sega's loss is paltry, compared to Sony, Panasonic, and Sharp in the billion$$! Shocked

Wow, now that is a giant amount of loss. Seven billion yen lost, phew boy. Back when I first starting playing video games 18 years ago, Sega was quite the giant and seemingly rolling in money as back then the popular games of today with Sega (Sonic the Hedgehog, Phantasy Star, etc) were just becoming very popular and this meant a tremendous financial increase for Sega.

Times certainly have changed since then though. As expected, but a seven billion yen loss is completely unexpected.

Please allow me to clarify what's going on at SEGA.

SEGASammy holdings,Inc. has had 3 straight years of strong profit and revenue on domestic product, but its overseas software division(paticulary the American division) has not made much profit. Plus SEGASammy has felt that the oversaturated, stagnated US market isn't worth heavy investment, and believes that companies like Gamestop and Activision Blizzard are monopolizing the market. Sonic Generations preformed less than expected(due to complete rehashed shit like Call of Duty)

And folks, $87 million is chump change. SEGASammy's total net worth is an estimate 29.30 billion yen($23.0 billion)

These moves only affect the US and Euro markets Sega West, and leaves other markets totally unaffected.

SEGASammy is also preparing to reform and expand itself into a new multi conglomerate called "Sega Orbi".

Kabushiki Kaisha Sega filed a new multimedia trademark "Orbi" in January of this year.

I ask that people read through it thoroughly, as it will begin to help you understand SEGA's future and why they are slowly dismantling their 3rd party division.

From that standpoint, Sega is not only shuttering its multiplatform overseas division and shrinking it down to digital content, but they are slowly dissolving it to make way for overseas divisions of SEGA Orbi, in that eventual case, the drop in Operating Income will save the company substantial budget and help them be able to invest in hardware.

I think they will focus less on Western oriented games like "Binary Domain" for a while. Hope Vocaloid games won't be affected by this incident since they do well in Japan and we can also easily import the PlayStation Project Diva games.

From what I've heard the majority of this company's money comes from the Sammy side, which makes me wonder how long it'll be until the divorce.
