Disney is making a movie based on a manga where a dead boxer's soul is reborn in a penguin, and they hired Reno 911's Travis Jr. to write it.
I'm sorry, I think that just broke my brain. Give me a second. Actually, this plot sounds like a bad Tim Allen movie. I can see this 'working'. Though I don't see fans of the manga thinking it's great. It seems like, if you weren't TOLD it was based on a manga, it's the kinda thing Hollywood would churn out on their own. I mean, I hope I'm wrong, any chance to see a movie that's even slightly related to anime is a plus in my book, so I'd like it to be good. |

XD OH MY GOD that premise is hilariously ridiculous.
I can TOTALLY see this working through Disney, though. By working, I mean have the same sort of audience as The Tooth Fairy or The Shaggy Dog. Oddly enough, this might be one of the most successful manga/anime adaptations to come out. I highly doubt it'll be a home run, but I could see it making a decent profit. Not bad, Disney... not bad at all. |

These were pretty much my thoughts as well while reading the article. But hey, at least in the end there will be money going to the creator and original publisher no matter how it turns out. |

They're probably approaching this movie with the mindset of The Shaggy Dog, except with penguins. The manga itself is 15 volumes long, so Disney is most likely only using the basic premise, then doing their own thing. It's actually a bit brilliant. Penguins are the in animal at the moment. Mr. Popper's Penguins did very well at the box office, and The Shaggy Dog was one of those older Disney movies that was popular enough to get remakes. (I've never seen the Tim Allen version, but the 1959 one wasn't so bad.) |

This actually reminds me of the film Oh! Heavenly Dog, wherein a detective is killed and is reincarnated into a dog (who is seconds away from being hit by a car/truck/some automobile) so he can solve the case of his murder.
Anyway, I'm not impressed by the guy attached. The Pacifier? Night at the Museum? I know the latter received at least some lukewarm reviews, but the former was terrible and critics agreed. No way this will turn out well. Though, to be honest, the plot doesn't sound great to begin with and I doubt many people (if any) could make it work. At least in live-action...But even an animated adaptation is likely to feel cheesy or cheap. |

First of all, this news could not have come at a better time since the book that Garant co-wrote with his screenwriting partner was just published about the screenwriting process: "Writing Movies for Fun and Profit." As an aspiring writer and the son of a professional film editor who has worked in the film business for over 35 years, this is the only book on screenwriting I have desired to read not just because it is the only one written by writers who have actually succeeded in the business but because their incites mesh well with the experiences and lessons my father taught me from the post-production side of the industry. More to the point, any anime fan who wants to understand the industry and the hurdles anime adaptations have to go through in Hollywood should check out this book as well.
About Garant himself, he is probably the best man for the job, not just given his history and expertise on screenwriting but because he is executive producing the production, suggesting he has some faith in the material itself instead of just taking it as a job. I await his next interview. Here's a link to an interview about the book: http://collider.com/thomas-lennon-ben-garant-interview-writing-movies-for-fun-and-profit/99923/ |

Actually if you're at all interested in how to write studio-friendly blockbusters, Ben Garant and his writing partner Tom Lennon wrote this book:
http://www.amazon.com/Writing-Movies-Fun-Profit-Billion/dp/1439186758/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312512755&sr=8-1 Which is really a fun read and remarkably blunt, practical advice on how to make a nice living writing movies studios buy. The premise alone on Tuxedo Gin almost seems like one of the "free movie ideas" included in the book (which are all pretty awful but totally sound like movies that would actually get made and score the writer a fat check). edit: beaten by mere seconds! |

Wow, y'know, I was gonna sell my manga series since it's a decent series, just not one with much re-read value, but this news....kinda makes me wanna keep it.
Really, this is probably gonna blow, and Tuxedo Gin was one of the first manga series I really got invested into collecting (I collected it right alongside Maison Ikkoku), and I honestly don't think this movie will end up well if it's live action or animated (I'm betting on live action). It kinda breaks my heart, I rarely get to see beloved book series ruined by films (since I mostly read manga and not physical books, though I got the experience with Cirque du Freak, movie sucked, but the manga is pretty awesome) and I hate to have to experience it again. |

I adore and own all 15 volumes of this series (took me a while to do it too).
I've been crossing my fingers for an anime version of the manga for YEARS now, and I log on to find this....... -.-;;;; Knowing Disney....it will be live action, it will reflect the Shaggy Dog, and it probably won't be true to the manga what-so-ever. Now, I will admit, I really did like Night at the Museum. It was a cute funny film! But I must warn you Disney.... ....you know every other joke in this manga is based around perverted penguin jokes....right? XDDDD (for those of you whom have never read Tuxedo Gin......think "Ranma 1/2 humor" of Ranma walking into a girl's bath house....) ....of course, I've heard good things about Garant (and his book). I believe if he's working on the film, it could be quite fun! Guess we'll have to wait and see.... |

machete: Actually, Mr. Popper disappointed, but it'll no doubt be profitable on home video.
zawa: Disney would have to go to a lot of trouble to ruin this premise. But I wouldn't be surprised if they succeeded. |

Gah, I knew I was forgetting to address something, and it was that there aren't a whole lot of G-rated jokes in the series. How ya gonna manage that one, Disney? How ya gonna prevent a penguin from getting angry and shoving his fin on someone's private? Whatcha gonna do instead? Or how about the mangaka's many attempts to get Minako's bra off in public (be it the jealous TV host or Gin spying in the hot springs?). Well damn, now I'm trying to think what they can take from the manga other than the basic premise.... |

This does sound like a Disney movie. It should be easy to adapt to Western family-rated setting. (What, ya guys really think they gonna follow the manga? Ha! Lemme show ya the Disney G-rated fairy tales...) And it's about a penguin - penguins are popular in the West.
Obviously this was not popular enough in Japan; otherwise, an anime would've been made of it years ago. So nobody should complain that Hollywood is making yet another adaptation from Asia - Japan had its chance and didn't wanna do it, so sucks for them. |

So it's going to star either Tim Allen, The Rock or Vin Diesel and a CG penguin, I take it? Oh boy, this should be interesting.

I have said don't judge people making a live action movie based off of Manga/Anime. But if it's Disney and it involves Anime then FVCK IT!
