I think the Ghibli films already sold more than a million in the US. Laughing

Americans also buy more DVDs per capita.

Where are numbers showing that? 500k for an anime DVD released in the US is a feat Totoro accomplished but I never heard anything about 1 million for any anime DVD released in the US.

Nope, not at the top of my head. The latest I recall is Ponyo DVD selling 823,068 units on last count, and that's released just last year. Imagine how many Spirited Away would've sold by now, with the publicity winning all those awards including the Oscars, since 2003.

A Ghibli DVD reaching a million units in America shouldn't be too much of a surprise. Many of these DVDs have been out for years in constant print. And let's not forget that Kiki's Delivery Service already sold more than a million VHS units over a decade ago. So if it can happen with VHS, it can happen with DVDs.

Well what you said was that Ghibli films already sell more than a million units in the US not that their films sell a lot or close to a million or that in the US and Canada sales were high for Kiki's Delivery Service on VHS. What I quoted from you was not whether or not a Ghibli film will pass the 1 million sales mark in the US but a statement from you that Ghibli films already did.

I won't be surprise but I am still waiting for something stating a million units of any Ghibli film has been sold in the US.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised if there already was one.
(BTW, my "statement" began with "I think.")

I don't follow animation DVD sales as much as I used to, so I'm not familiar of an official statement. I'll ask some friends at Nausicaa.net for some updates.

(Come to think of it, maybe ANN could start a weekly US sales feature too....)
