LOL is an official word now. What's the official spelling? LOL! Can't believe they entered Hentai. Did they have the word anime too? Yea, I'm guessing so.
Now we just need "yay" and we're all set. "Man, I yayed so hard that other night."

Webster is American. Oxford is proper English for the rest of the world. Wink

*slams head against desk*

How many times do I have to say it? Anime (and, of course, all animation) is a medium, not a genre. You make me sad, Oxford.

More like the origin is the correct definition. If you think about it, the definition is wrong and really just something the people have grown use to using.

Actually, the definition is correct for the common English usage of the word.

I wonder what the current definition of "irony" is in the OED... (or "to beg the question" for that matter)

In the hentai definition, OED didn't state anime is a genre. It said "genres of manga and anime."

This is how languages work, words change usage all the time, and meaning changes from culture to culture even. When we get to the point that people have grown used to using a word in a certain way *bam* definition changes (or at least when people are willing to recognize that it has). Japanese does this even more blatantly with English anyways. I'm seriously confused as to how people can think that arguing for original usage is even rational.

Dictionary.com wrote:
a class or category of artistic endeavor having a particular form, content, technique, or the like: the genre of epic poetry; the genre of symphonic music.

Dictionary.com wrote:
10. art
a. the category of a work of art, as determined by its materials and methods of production: the medium of wood engraving
b. the materials used in a work of art

Dictionary.com isn't the best, but for things like this it's good enough. As far as everyone that watches it (I guess in the West, or w/e) is concerned, it's a genre. I mean seriously, when some one says , "Ima go watch some anime", I don't think , " Derp, he's going to go something animated". I'm thinking he's going to go watch Japanese 2D cartoons with the typically highly stylized character designs we expect from that.

Ah, no, it isn't the same. Manga and anime are mediums. Mediums would be split into genres.

While in the US when someone says I'm going to go watch some anime we understand that to mean they are watching Japanese animation. That does not say anything about what genre of anime they are going to watch. Unless, of course, you are saying that Full Metal Panic Fumoffu is the same genre as Grave of the Fireflies or Cool Devices. Which in that case, then Survivor must be the same genre as NCIS. I mean, they are both live action, made in the USA and air in the evenings, right?
