Should there not be talk about what happened to Chris Handley? Its something that could truthfully happen to any of us- the next manga or doujin you order could get you jail time. It's not that cut and dry but it is a big deal. Or do you not think so? And if so then please feel free to share...i'm interested. Because really, the idea you might not care is as big a deal as the case. etc..... As for the commentaries I thought they were well put. I think Horn's may have an extra "that" in the first line though. This whole case has Nineteen Eighty-Four written all over it. Yeah, it's just absurd. Those type of manga are just frigging drawings that are just fictional!
Christ Handley did nothing wrong. He bought those that are legal (those that are licensed by such company or are imported oversea) and yet, he got arrested and sentenced to the jail? Very, very wrong with the court systems. |

Well it's clear that with the way America's court system acts I can never even consider ordering a doujin ever.
It's cases like this that make me wonder when the line's going to be crossed. Because someday censorship may become so ridiculous that people may take matters into their own hands to end it. I just hope the CBLDF and other organizations like it accomplish their mission and help to create a world where ridiculous cases like this are never even involved in the legal system at all. |

I saw about a dozen people pawing through stacks of doujins last year at A-Kon that were likely not too dissimilar from the ones Hadley bought.

Unfortunately, if you look through the archives on the CBLDF website, you'll see that this sort of thing happens all the time (Anyone remember Jesus Castillo? The Dude who was busted for selling adult manga to a ... get this ... adult? that was Texas, though. Like California, it can't be used as a basis for the average citizen). I'm drained by the whole thing. I'll just read the thread, and see what happens.
Ahh, but since it's not illegal to own them, only illegal to ship them across state lines (if you take this ruling seriously) those people can quietly masturbate in peace, without fretting over Big Brother and his Voyeuristic eye. |

Carl Horn's commentary definitely hit what I've been thinking in regards to this. Who is really out of touch with reality? The person reading manga and watching anime, or the person who thinks it actually means something and would go so far as to send someone to jail?
I keep coming back to the clear contradiction between this and violence in entertainment. We can watch movies with horrific murders and nobody is going to lock us up because they think we're going to haul off and kill someone even if it's live action, let alone a drawing, but a drawing of minors engaged in sex means that this guy was a menace worthy of jail? Somehow I don't see the connection. I mean sure, I'd never look at something like that because I personally find it disgusting, but at least I can tell the difference between reality and a cartoon. |

Can we (the U.S.) point fingers at the Muslim world for their reactions to the Danish Muhammed cartoons any more? I'm not so sure. I guess no one is calling for the death of Handley yet, although it wouldn't surprise me a bit if someone does. Even our liberal Democratic President wants pedophiles executed, and Handley is all-but being labeled as one.

So Handley is a veteran who carried a four point in school and possessed no porn outside of erotic manga? I hadn't heard that before. I feel even worse for him now, but at the same time, geeze, if there was ever a test case for challenging these obscenity laws. . . .

This is the kind of thing that makes me feel ashamed to say I live in the USA.

Save for the fact that this was a federal case. It took place in a federal district court in Iowa and was prosecuted by the US Attorney's office. Don't blame the state for a federal issue. |

I think any sane human being, whether they be from the US or anywhere else for that matter, can still point a finger at the response to the Danish cartoon. Innocent people who had nothing to do with the cartoon were randomly murdered in so-called "response" to something that rational Muslims and others have been doing for hundreds of years. Not to say that there shouldn't be serious concern here, as this case really does reflect a cognitive dissonance within the justice system as it relates to sex crimes. Scary stuff. |

I bet if he had a better lawyer to argue his case maybe things would have been different. This really makes no sense. How about we please arrest the kids who murdered the the two teens at the party on my street . Like that is a crime! Different country though ^-^"
