Maybe they mean cool as in 'barely tolerable even to other otaku'?
It's cool to hate (or so I've been told), so it makes a kind of sense.

I don't know about the merits of the conference, but the name they chose has to be just about the worst thing ever.

Cool Japan is not the same thing as Cool otaku.
But more curious: how many pages did it take to which the single sentence "Most people think they're weird" couldn't cover?
I want to see the conference as I, too, am curious to know what "moe" is.
Will ANN be there to cover it?

If ANN wants to pay me big bucks to be a stringer, I could cover it for them. I have relatives and friends in Ottawa, which is only about a 4 hour drive away from Toronto. I wish this event was being held in Toronto - I'd definitely check it out.

Eh, I'm in Ottawa and I like moé (but the slice-of-life comedy stuff, not the harem stuff), so I'll probably check it out.

Oh I'd love to be a fly on the wall at this one.
