ANNual Halloween Pumpkin Carving Contest

I tried to send in my first entry, and got this message:

Yup, pretty much what the above poster said. Craft pumpkins are a lot easier to carve, so it gives people an unfair advantage.

By the way, more prizes have been added!

I mean, is it not true that creating the right contrast with a marker would be much much easier than doing it with a knife?

I disagree, for a couple reasons. It's really only possible to draw on unscraped pumpkin skin, so you can't just scrawl on bare pumpkin flesh with a Sharpie. Also, if someone does, we can pretty much tell from the daytime photo, and we'll note it accordingly. And honestly, Sharpie on uncarved pumpkin really doesn't make a huge difference.

The only thing that marker is really useful for is taking long-exposure nighttime shots.

Yes I understand how its used for contrast and maybe this is just my opinion but I would think that preventing your dark values from being overexposed should be a challenge of the carving process and not just a marker touch-up. I think its a ten minute substitute for 2 hours of work. That's basically my point and I won't keep arguing it if you disagree. Thanks for addressing the question instead of making pointless baiting comments.
