The censorship is actually broader than that, namely almost all books that favorable to GLBT and many feminist books, from biographies, history, childrens books, manga, erotica, etc. It's not a 'glitch' as Amazon has claimed, because homophibic books are not delisted, but top many of the searches for gay categories. The delisting also affects other international Amazon sites.

I don't really approve of the censorship, but I'm not going to cry over B-L manga being removed from my searches.

It's pure BS. They're screaming that it's only the BL lines being effected but it wasn't. It was pretty much accross the erotica line up. As well as several classical litterature titles as well. Though i wll admit the GLBT bore the brunt of it.

LEts face it, somehow i can't see amazon introducing such a big policy change not only on a sunday, but also on a holiday. They're more likely to do it during the week when someone's actually in the office

Amazon have had a bug in their ranking/delisting program from day one but have never fixed it.

Probably what happened was that a couple of groups of arch conservatives/anti gays got together and mass hit amazon. It's not like this hasn't happened before (and as early as november last year)

So far the following have all been targeted by the glitch:

Scientology (both the victim and the perpetrator)
Christianity books
Muslim books
Pagan books
Creationism
Erotica (4 times that i know of)
Fantasy novels

The entire gay fandom scene is getting a persecution complex where anything that happens HAS to be targetted against them, and it's impossible for it to be a glich or error, cause software never has errors, and this has never happened before. (please note the sarcasm dripping there)

Ah, is it just me or does this "glitch" sound more like a very deliberate choice of what not to have on their site that they are trying to pretend is something else? I've always believed that people should be given the chance to make up their own minds about things and that means they need access to them.

Most volumes of Let Dai, Earthian, all of Gorgeous Carat, some of Yamane Ayano's Finder series and many others have also been de-ranked. It's specifically the manga titles that happen to be categorised under 'gay' that are being affected - BL titles just under the general graphic novel categories have retained their sales ranks.

On the yuri side of things, the first volume of Maka Maka, The Last Uniform, the manga version of Strawberry Panic, Iona-sama Fanatics, Rica'tte Kanji and at least one of the Yuri Monogatari anthologies are unranked - some of these were definitely categorised under 'lesbian'.

It's only the front page searches that they are disappearing from - you can still find them by going into the books section.

The majority of the books affected were non manga - large sections of the GLBT categories, and many erotica novels, plus all sorts of other things. Unfortunately, manga listed in the categories that were targeted were also affected.

Would a Woman Alien on Human Man or Man Alien on Human Woman be banned by them because it is a Hentai Manga with sex with only with opposite sex in it?

And here I'd been thinking AmazonFail had spared the manga titles... Sad

I didn't realize #Amazonfail was affecting manga too but I'm not surprised.

They're not banning them. The "glitch" de-ranked and removed items from their search engine. Which can be bad for sales >_>

Not banned, but still it's a form of censorship, and this is really, really bad. Sad

What christianity books? Also, even if the glitch has targeted more than one type of book, it's understandable to be angry about the (whether accidental or not) deranking of any book that talks about homosexuality as a good thing or homophobia as a bad thing (paraphrasing Angry Black Woman), and their justification that they are deranking books that are "adult" doesn't hold water as deranked books include child-suitable fare such as "Heather has Two Mommies" and heterosexual porn titles are not deranked (such as various Playboy books). And, as already noted, they are also deranking many feminist books, feminist sexuality books (such as S.E.X. The All You Need To Know Progressive Sexuality Guide to Get You Through High School and College), books about sexuality and disability, books about healing after rape and books about trans issues. I guess this could be the result of "tag bombing" by religious conservatives and other homophobes and not amazon's fault, but it's trivialising to claim that it's all about a persecution complex.

In consideration of our entire customer base, we exclude “adult” material from appearing in some searches and best seller lists.

So Berserk and Gantz are suddenly for children? Rolling Eyes

Anyway, that'll be good for Right stuf, so that's what matters.

It's a sad day when an institution specializing in providing books begins to censor what readers may find for the books using searches. This goes beyond the Orwellian 1984 and more into life control of media a-la thanks 1138.
