I wish these companys would release anime in Walmart then alot more people will see it then buy it. I don't know how many times i have seen Inuyasha season 6, and those bleach box sets sell out.

It's not surprising, but those are significant losses. Makes you wonder how much longer FUNi will be able to use DBZ as their crutch.
I'd go into that...other subject, but I'm expending my energies on it in a certain other topic right now.

I think that's got less to do with the fact that they're at Wal-mart, and more the fact to do with that both those series (and Naruto, which Wal-mart carries) are among the top-sellers in the US. Really, Best Buy is what's going to be hurting anime in the future, if they make too many cutbacks on anime. Niche titles are one thing, those seem to sell better online anyway, but if they start cutting back on the bigger sellers, which they already have (One Piece was #13 in sales for 2008's first half, and Best Buy isn't getting anymore in), that's when we're going to have problems.
Anyway, I'm just glad Funi acknowledges this is mainly due to the economy, since they said they'd keep the straight-to-boxset format if sales improved by 25%, but I think they realize the format had nothing to do with dropping sales. Though I think their hands are tied now, a return to singles for all series would probably cause too much fan backlash and dropping sales to be worth it.

There are so many things on backorder at Best Buy now, I can't buy almost anything at their stores anymore (those Crunch bars maybe). I had to order Lucky Star vol. 5, Ouran vol. 2, and Code Geass Part 3 on Ebay.

losses are accounting charges to do with closure of a division, BCI, and childrens dvd's division. "However, if the restructuring charges are taken out, Navarre ended up with an operating income of US$2.6 million this past quarter." lower profits than normal but not surprising in this environment.

Exactly. And the numbers - assuming they are accurate - show that the division of which Funimation is a part is holding up far better than Navarre as a whole for that period - 12% downturn vs. 21.1%. Funimation appears unlikely to become a burden for Navarre, but the opposite is certainly a possibility. Foundering large companies have been known to drag their successful subsidiaries right down with them, and I have a few layoff notices to prove it.

They haven't really been using DBZ as a crutch for ages--any more than ADV & their Eva ad nauseum repackages. Funi has a lot of other product selling pretty well--I just breezed thru One Piece Part 3 & am working thru Ouran part 2.

Which suggests there's padding maybe. It'a a smoke & mirrors game, like all these movies that don't make a profit after the accountants finish their work. It's a tax game, not unlike the Obama pick with tax issues. My mother-in-law used to ride me to cheat on my taxes "Everyone does it". Only when corporations do it, it's tax shelters & creative accounting.
However, this is an example of what happened with Geneon USA. Were Funi doing poorly, Navarro could axe them to save a buck just as Geneon in Japan axed Geneon USA (Oh, yeah. Shonen Onmyoji 6 & Saiunkoku 3 are in the mail to me as I type. Yeah Funi distributing Geneon. I don't think DBZ is as much a piece of the pie as some people make it out to be. It's still a fun title)

Walmart is an evil empire.
I know I'm not the only one who refuses to shop there.
I really don't know why people are so insistant on getting anime from brick & mortar stores when most of the online places can get one pretty much anything that is available.
I get most $10 manga for $6. $30 list dvds are about $16. One Piece sets are $27. Plus I don't have to waste my time, gas & wear & tear on the car driving all over town looking for titles (Been there/done that in the past)

Not really that bad of news really. Most business are seeing a ±15-20% drop across the board, and FUNi's arm of 12% falls right in line with that. Perhaps it is oddly strange that the last anime company that still dubs all of its anime is still seeing profits.
Navarre is in trouble though, they lost buku bucks this quarter. It will take them a bit to recoup those restructuring costs.

Crud, I was hoping BCI going away was only a rumor. I'm still in the midst of collecting the She-Ra boxsets and the 2002 reboot of He-Man. Better snap 'em up this weekend.

For those of you wondering:

essentially means that their business ties aren't as strong anymore, which makes a lot of sense, considering the international market ain't what it used to be.

I cant seem to find any of funimation's recent releases in stores. i've been searching for the 3rd vols of claymore and one piece, and they're backordered at best buy as well as brick and mortar anime stores.

I wish FUNi would get over the schizophrenia of release formats and just stick to boxed sets. There's no reason to confuse the buyer/milk the product with singles when most people are going to snap up the complete boxes.

Not surprised, everybody is feeling the hard times. And they're having to shut down BCI, so anything can happen in the 4th quarter. Still, they can make a comeback, just like everybody else.

I ordered One Piece Season 1 Voyage 3 on 1/18 from TRSI, received it last week & watched it over the weekend. Same with Ouran Host Club Collection 2.
I'd gamble more of an issue is the people placing the orders at those brick & mortar stores. Their flow is different. They expect a certain amount of sales in a certain amount of time whereas online they aren't taking up shelf space.
I can't say I'm all that impressed with Best Buy any longer. I get movies from them, but if it's not the latest hot release, it's maybe 50-50 they'll have it. Stores don't want to have to mark that item down in 3 months because no one's bought it.
We actually had stores under a similar concept. Best Products had a showroom, but then one filled out the order blank & one's purchase rolled down the conveyor belt all filled & ready to go. Blue Chip Stamps did that also.
Considering the nature of manga & anime, it really makes much more sense to follow a warehouse format. Who knows how long it might take for someone to want to buy that Misc.Manga Vol 7 sitting there turning yellow? If 7 doesn't sell, the store purchasing agent may not order any vol 8's. So you maybe picked up your volume 7 somewhere else, but when you return to your usual store to buy Vol 8, they're not stocking it...
