Thanks. It's nice to know Sony's playing someplace more accessible. Maybe they want it to win this time. For some reason, though, I couldn't find that sucker on Moviefone or Fandango until now...Someone commenting on the place claims matinee is $4.50. >_<

I envy those lucky folk who are able to get to this cinema. Perhaps this bodes well for this title's journey towards becoming licensed.

It's already licensed, actually-by Sony.

See, I have a question...
Is this one of those films where like, everyone's going crazy over it for some artistic reason? Like say, american film goers love for movies like Atonement or There Will Be Blood? Something... really deep and stuff?
Cause if so, no offense, I think I'll just skip this altogether. I just NEVER can get into those kinds of movies.

I'm so envious. It's playing in my old neighborhood, and the theater has had a complete face lift. I've seen a few cool films there that barely showed elsewhere. Eclectic, entertainment biz audience normally, so it might even do some non-otaku business. Though of course it's just qualifying for the Oscars as they mentioned.
GATSU: You probably know, it's a tiny, very old (but renovated) place that survives showing independent films in a trendy little three block neighborhood near Hollywood. I wouldn't call it accessible to a broad public, and that's also why it's cheap. If they thought it would make money, it would be in a large independent-movie chain like Laemmle.

Well after watching the trailer and seeing the plane(s) I wanted to see the movie. But after watching it I was disapointed at how much of a art film it is. It was slower then it needed to be and the world they lived in was never really explained, I got more info from the synopsis then I did from the movie.

It sounds like one of Mamoru Oshii's usual outings. I've always enjoyed his work. He does tend to be very artsy but he's a very visual and philosophical filmmaker. I'll make sure to catch this movie by the end of the week.

This looks kind of interesting. I always try to catch His films, even though I haven't really liked any of them since the first GITS movie. Oh well, no harm in checking it out.

parker: That's not why I pointed out the price. I thought it'd promote the film better. But then I realized it's Oshii's own Steamboy, unfortunately. [I.E. a director trying to do the same thing, but appeal to a different demo, and failing miserably.]

Got it. I would love to just be able to see it in a theater, as I've never seen an anime on the big screen. But from what I've heard about it, I wouldn't have expected box office performance. I am not a fan of Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, for instance, which I think is really "pretty", but lacking in most other aspects.

*sigh* You couldn't just get the point I don't understand the appeal of the movie? Is it that hard to purvey?
I've never seen it, but the way I've heard people talk about it and the movie hardcores, like say Roger Ebert or someone like him, those people in general, and the academy and whatnot, I imagine it's something I just plain wouldn't get.
It's a bummer though, I enjoyed Steamboy on multiple levels, plot, characters, art, etc...
But it looks like it's not gonna have that same appeal. It's gonna be too 'much' for me to get, I'm predicting.
Anyways, thanks for explaining chronium, I'm just gonna plan to avoid it altogether now. Really just doesn't sound like my kind of thing.
It's annoying too, I can get into movies like Makoto Shinkai's stuff, as I absolutely loved That Place Promised in Our Early Days and that was definitely a more 'artsy' film when I look back on it.
But if I had to guess, there's probably too much... unsatisfying about Sky Crawlers for me to go and enjoy it lately. That, and I'm just burnt out on movies as a whole.
Still, good to see it getting into theaters, that's what matters.

How can you say you "can't understand the appeal" of the movie if you haven't seen it? What the hell?
Guess what, I don't understand the appeal of chocolate. I haven't actually tasted it, but it seems artsy and stuff.

Uh, no.
Not to mention I'm really confused on your opinion of Atonement and There Will Be Blood, without having seen either. Sure, I can get a lot of technical fascination out of TWBB, but I love it just because it's so enjoyable. Don't see why you think you'd have a problem.

None of the comments I've read so far about the film have been that it's an "art film." Quite the opposite, in fact: it's apparently one of Oshii's most accessible works (well, post-Patlabor: The Movie, anyhow).
If having a slow pace makes a movie an "art film," then a lot of older flicks quality for the designation -- nonsense.
Also, it's a straight adaption of the novel, with some changes in regards to the ending: and, from what I've been told, there's enough hints as to what the exact condition of the world is in.

His assessment is the first of its kind. I've seen nothing but praise for The Sky Crawlers, otherwise.
