Actually, MB never released the anime, since they couldn't get the rights. They did release the movie though. On an unrelated note, I asked Edgar Wright if he heard of Lupin, since he was also presenting Phantom of the Paradise, and it clearly influenced Mamo, and he said he had-though I'm not sure if he was just being nice. What's really weird is that, of all the cult stuff he's seen over the years, at the time, he claimed to have never watched "Meet the Feebles".

Anyway, I love the New Beverly, so I'll just quote from Wright's 'Beverly Myspace entry for the event:

Quote:
Edgar Wright himself sez:
Check it out.

The New Beverly are not only showing SHAUN OF THE DEAD as their Halloween film this year, but they let me pick the other half of the Bill.

After some agonizing and mulling over some comic horror faves (most of which either I played at my last fest or have been shown a whole bunch already), I chose a film that played as the secret third feature at the close of my Wright Stuff festival last December.

So the honour goes to the 1991's startling Hong Kong epic RIKI OH: THE STORY OF RICKY.

What could be more amazing than a film that names it protagonist twice in the title?

And what could be more Halloween-y than a ridiculously gory futuristic prison romp with a hero who can play the flute and punch through peoples heads?

RIKI OH also makes for a great drinking game. Just take a shot anytime someone says "Ricky!" and anytime someone's head is exploded.

This is often. You is going to get fucked up.

As further proof of SHAUN and RIKI OH being the perfect Halloween double; I now offer you the IMDB plot keywords for both movies.

BTW, I hear Wright might judge a costume contest on Halloween.

So Wright appears to be good for Friday, but not guaranteed for Saturday.

This was one screening that was full of surprises. For one, most of the audience hadn't seen Riki-Oh! In addition, John Landis [Director of Animal House, Blues Bros., An American Werewolf in London, and the Thriller video] showed up for the latter film! [For a remake, I hope. Wink] There was also a sizable amount of fan-girls there, and most of them even stayed after Shaun of the Dead! Plus the person who won the costume contest ironically just wore a sheet with holes for the eyes over her head. Laughing Definitely a fun event.
