I think I need a refresher on how Maomao wound up back in Gyokuyou's employ. I tried skimming through some older episodes, but couldn't find when it happened. I remember it happening but don't remember the circumstances surrounding it. I forget, is she still technically in Jinshi's employ, but on loan to Gyokuyou while she's pregnant?

. As you probably remember, lead-based whitening makeup was a key plot point at the start of the first season, and you probably also recall that this was tied specifically to infant and fetal deaths.

It was actually arsenic, not lead. The light novels said it more explicitly.

I am 95% certain that is correct.

Maomao is back! With her Aoi Yuki snark, perversions, ability to sniff out and figure out mysteries, and wholesome moments with Xiaolan!

We've even got another Maomao! And Jinshi realizing he's a cat person in love with a cat!

I love how Gaoshun looks at porn and just appreciates the production value...and limiting what Jinshi and the Emperor see.

Shisui seems like a fun Asami Seto character. And I love me a good girl friendship trio.

Obviously it seems like there's some kind of "leak" regarding pregnancies among the concubines (potentially not just Gyokuyou but even Lihua as well, judging by that scene with her). And Gyokuyou and Lihua's head attendants both look suspicious.

I'm pretty sure she was given back to Gyokuyou at the end of season 1.

You're right; I wrote the wrong thing. I got switched around by listing the Scheele's Green before the lead makeup.

I do think Maomao's assault on the Crystal Pavilion was funnier in the LN and the Square Enix manga (where we don't see it at first beyond a distancing panel/sentence about the ladies screaming, then cut to Jinshi's scolding) -- and that makes the whiplash stronger when you learn why she was so keen on sniffing everyone, and realize someone's attempting a stochastic miscarriage, attacking the emperor's bloodline with near-perfect plausible deniability. Still, it works well here.

Yeah, I think it was in episode 20. She was glad, because it meant she'd be working somewhere Lakan couldn't go.

No, you were right the first time. The LNs are indeed explicit, and they say the exact opposite.

LN1, chapter 29 wrote:
“Well,” Fengming said slowly. “You’ve got it all figured out, haven’t you? Even though you’re the daughter of the worthless quack who couldn’t help Lady Ah-Duo.”

“Yes. Even so.” Blame in medicine couldn’t be dismissed with a helpless shrug: something else her father had said. He would have readily accepted abuse like “quack.” “You know that quack prevented your mistress from using face powder with white lead in it. And you were too smart to have given the child something so deadly.”

LN2, chapter 5 wrote:
Maomao suspected this youngest child was the only one who saw what the old craftsman had been after. Soldering involved mixing several different types of metal together so that they would melt at a lower temperature than normal. Maomao knew of one such possible combination: lead and tin. Why in the world did she know this? Because lead was poisonous, of course. She’d once seen a metalworker who had poisoned himself melting lead. Then there was the face-whitening powder that had been popular in the rear palace: her father had told her that it was lead-based.

LN3, chapter 4 wrote:
One more thing nagged at Maomao. “Doesn’t this remind you of...you know?”

“Remind me of what?” Jinshi replied, unsure what her vague remark was getting at.

She was thinking of something that seemed like perfectly respectable merchandise for the rear palace, but which could have an unexpected side effect.

“The toxic face powder,” Maomao said, and a flash of understanding could be seen on every face in the room. The summer before, Princess Lingli had fallen ill for reasons unknown. Simultaneously, the same thing had happened to Consort Lihua’s son, the heir apparent, who had subsequently died. Now, a non-lead-based face whitener was used in the rear palace, and the old stuff was no longer allowed. Perhaps it had caused them to let down their guard.

For that matter, the anime's version of the last one, in this very episode, makes it explicit in the dialogue:

Maomao: "Isn't this similar to the other incident?"
Jinshi: "What other incident?"
Maomao: "Something whose side effects aren't well known. Something that's not out of place at the rear palace. Isn't it like what made Princess Lingli sick, and caused the death of Concubine Lihua's child?"
Gyokuyou: "The toxic makeup powder..."
Maomao: "Yes, the whitening face powder that contained lead."

Then I take back my apology. Laughing I've had a long few days with family stuff, and I'm not sure what's what tonight.

AH! I got it mixed up with something that happens later that, back when I was reading through the manga, I saw multiple other readers posting about it mistakenly thinking it was lead again and then getting corrected that it was actually arsenic. Sorry! My bad.
(For the record, the later thing I got it mixed up with was [Spoilers] spoiler[The paint that poisoned the former emperor and prevented his corpse from decomposing].)

I would like to apologize for relying on just my memory of the manga and commenting before I had gotten a chance to watch episode 26. I will try to make sure it does not happen again in the future.
