I wasn't even aware that One Piece was free to watch on Crunchyroll. Probably because the free to watch with adverts is region specific?

Sony Interactive Entertainment has nothing to do with Sony Pictures Television Networks, by extension, Crunchyroll. Two different divisions within the company. More than likely, they saw people enjoying a thousand-plus episodes of super popular anime for free and decided to paywall it. It's a company after all, and something got to keep the lights on.

They still have free episodes but it’s a lot more limited compared to before.

I think it's more likely they have a set date on when the free shows expire and it was probably up for One Piece.

Tbh I assumed One Piece was always behind a paywall even before the majority of their catalog went that way, but I suppose just the dub was (which was pretty typical long before the merger). One Piece has always been locked on UK CR, though I think the dub is still free on the BBC iPlayer which only started airing there for the first time earlier this year.
Nine times out of ten decisions regarding One Piece streaming/distribution/dub release/etc... seem to be made by Toei anyway given the control they have over that show compared to non-Toei titles on CR + how previous Funi/current CR employees talk about working on that license. No clue if that's the case here or not, but can't say it's surprising at least.

Crunchyroll is currently tampering Canada into a mega fan premium.

So basically all the teenagers that can’t afford to pay for anything will be watching One Piece on illegal streaming sites or maybe torrent it if they can actually understand how to do that. What an excellent move by SonyRoll to curb piracy. Not.

I had no idea that it was possible to watch anything (other than promo's or trailers) on Crunchyroll for free until today. And I've learned a lot from this forum regarding some being free. I wonder why it didn't happen earlier.

This seemingly presumes these “alleged” teenagers weren’t already watching this stuff illegally to begin with. And not because they’re all broke.

I didn't even know they were still offering free anime anymore, but why One Piece specifically?

Gotta guess they did a numbers (considering the exponential increase of OP watchers since the Netflix show and the current anime been on the roll), and decided that just making money on the ad-based, but technically free to view model is just not enough so they decided to shoot it to the foot even harder.

The irony of an anime about pirates about to become the most pirated anime ever.

Basically this will be just like with the newest released episodes on the Platform for people like me who both watch the newest episodes and have premium membership.
I only pay the middle membership option for my premium membership.
The sad thing is with the recent activity from Japan, pirate sites are disappearing which more sad for the material that is unavailable compared to the official releases and streaming sites.
