My opinion echoes Shinichiro Miki's. Escaflowne is awesome!

The Vision of Escaflowne is one of my favorite anime! Really, it's one of the few good fantasy anime. And that soundtrack, wow.

My first favorite anime that I didn’t discover via Toonami. It’s criminal that you can’t legally stream it in the US currently.

The BD boxset is still in print and it's best to just buy a physical copy.

You know I'd love to see an updated anime of Escaflowne like Fruits Basket did, maybe more along the lines of the same anime style of the movie.

But gosh it's been 28 years already since it first aired ..wow.. I still love watching it again and again.

JPEGmafia sample of the OP and a clip of Van getting into escaflowne from the movie making the rounds on completely unrelated social media might be culprits. Episode 1 podcast used some tracks from it for their anime satire thing. GoodSmileCompany did some models. All these somehow turn into a whirlwind.

I only fear that they would make the Guymelef's CG which would lose a lot of the appeal of their hand-drawn versions.

The reason why this is being treated as some utterly bizarre happening in Japan is because Escaflowne was NOT all that popular over there, unlike the popularity it saw abroad. In Japan Escaflowne is generally looked at as an also-ran or afterthought by most, with even its sole inclusion in the Super Robot Wars series being Compact 3 for the WonderSwan Color in 2003, which itself is best known as the entry whos roster is literally best described (& literally advertised in Japan) as "Get a load of THESE weirdos!", as Escaflowne was grouped with Mechander Robo, Acrobunch, & Betterman as the debuting titles.

Like many others I love Escaflowne, but it's lack of popularity in Japan is what makes this news so interesting. While Cowboy Bebop is often erroneously cited as "That anime that bombed in Japan but was a massive hit around the world", that actually does describe Escaflowne.

Yeah, but no GaoGaiGar to go with it. I really enjoyed playing through Compact 3 over a decade ago, but there's no doubt that it's a weird SRW.

A solid show can always find a new audience. For example, it seemed like a while back everyone was watching The Sopranos for the first time.
