To LN reader without spoiler, is the "counter Attack Arc" the same length as the "Attack Arc" Because since the "Counter Attack Arc" is gonna start at episode 18, it would mean like max 7 episodes with that arc. But if it's just as long then it would line up with the rumoured 3 cour that got leaked over a year ago.

The terminology being thrown around is abit confusing because everything is an "Arc"

To be clear, both the "Attack" (8 episodes in 2024) and "Counterattack" (8 episodes in 2025) arcs comprise the adaptation of Arc 5 (volume 16-20) of the written story, which brings the total episode count of the Arc 5 adaptation to 16 episodes (19 if you consider episode 1 to be worth 4 episodes).

Now, while not outright stated, the S3 announcement materials (mainly the LN illustrator Ōtsuka's celebratory artwork) strongly implied that the goal of S3 would be to adapt both Arc 5 and Arc 6 - and the leakers for their part have confirmed this to be the case and continue to do so. This means that there will be a yet-unannounced set of episodes after the "Counterattack" arc, still under the "Season 3" umbrella, which will cover Arc 6.

That said, given that Arc 6 is bigger than Arc 5, I honestly wouldn't be suprised - and the leakers don't discard it-- that they rebranded the Arc 6 part to a "Season 4", either that or the SnK style "Final Season Part 2" shenanigans.

As for the original question, it's a bit hard to tell exactly where they'll split Arc 5 off (it being an arc with an odd numbered book count doesn't help lol). I kinda wanna say Counterattack is bigger but 1) there's really no hard boundary and 2) Arc 5 is fairly fight and action heavy, which can distort the "pages per minute" ratio, if you will. Either way, there's 0 chance of a rushed adaptation with this episode count.

It's been some time since I've read 16, but I'm pretty sure most of it is just setup to the actual conflict, I suppose you could fit that neatly in a 90-minute special, and then adapt the other four books with the remaining 15 episodes?

Yeah I was coming to edit my post because I completely forgot episode 1 already aired and we know it adapts all of volume 16, so theyll probably split the rest of the 15 episodes evenly between the other 4 volumes, but you beat me to it Razz

Hmmm but they said in the article that the counterattack arc will start on Feb 5th, so unless they are planning to do 8 episodes, go on a 8 weeks break and then do 8 episodes. it soud more like this is gonna be 3 cour and it is only gonna cover Arc 5

Aoi Yuki as the Lust Sin Archbishop in a skimpy outfit? Yes please.

Also I'm expecting the fight against the Archbishops goes really bad before Subaru Returns by Death.

Wow, the Fall season this year is looking nearly as loaded as the Fall season last year (and I consider Fall '23 to be possibly the best anime season ever). In addition to this one, we've got sequels for DanMachi, SAO:GGO, Blue Exorcist, Shangri-La Frontier, Arifureta, and Bleach (among others) and the debut of the new Ranma ½, and that's just the bigger names.

Even so, this and DanMachi are probably my two most-anticipated titles. And I'll listen to any OP done by MYTH & ROID.

So I guess the pacing of S3 is similar to S2, roughly 4 episodes per volume. My guess is the first half which is 11 episodes length will cover Vol 16-18 and second half which is 8 episodes will cover Vol 19-20.

"Attack" (Arc 5, part 1) starts in October 2024, "Counterattack" (Arc 5, part 2) starts in February 2025. This will 100% be it for Arc 5, there's definitely not enough material there to justify a 3rd cour of any length.

Wether Arc 6 will be adapted as part of "Season 3" remains to be seen. On one hand - no official word either way, right now they're just announcing this batch of 16 episodes related to Arc 5. On the other hand, leakers are saying Arc 6 is happening afterwards and the celebratory illustration seem to back that up since it includes Arc 6 characters - tough while Otsuka is the illustrator of the LN and thus is more connected than the average Joe, he isn't part of the Anime production, so take his "word" as quasi canon. Regardless, whether it happens or not, it will happen sometime after the batch of episodes in February and with an undisclosed episode count. Personally, I'd just call it "Season 4" regardless of whatever "SnK Final Season"-esque naming convention they slap on it, since I +/- assume it'll have a release window of Fall 2025 at the earliest, most likely 2026, but that's just me.

I am so looking forward to the new season, and I would have LOVED a director's cut of season 2 like what they did for season 1.
