Most of the internet is assuming this will be an anniversary short akin to Gundam Perfect Mission. That being said, Trigger has gotten their foot in the door with shorts before, like with their Gridman short before they got to make SSSS.Gridman. The hope is that they get to do something similar here, because besides Transformers One, which isn't even formally out yet, animation for this franchise has been kind of bleh for over a decade now.

I’ve always wanted a Studio Trigger Transformers anime…but if we can’t have that, an animated short is the next best thing. Going off the teaser, I guess they’re re-animating iconic scenes? Maybe like the recent Naruto and Digimon anniversary shorts?

Most likely it's a video commemorating the entire 40 years of the franchise, not a single part. Judging from the bit with Armada Sparkplug and Hot Rod we're going to get a few interesting crossovers. Anything involving the original movie specifically will probably not happen until its 40th anniversary in 2026.

I remember the Transformers parody in Panty & Stocking so this would be very fitting. I've always been a fan of the Japanese Transformers series although I also enjoyed G1 (American continuity version), Beast Wars, and to a lesser extent Animated and Prime.. I think a new Transformers anime would be nice to see again after all this time although I have my doubts it'll be anything more than a promo or short. But it would be a great showcase of what Trigger can do with the franchise.

The conversation about Transformers being an anime or not goes on. Back to Japan this time.

I've never seen anyone questioning whether Transformers is an anime, I think most fans and even some non-fans are aware that the Transformers franchise is mix of Japanese and U.S. concepts. Some people are aware that the first wave of Transformers G1 figures where mainly imports of various Japanese toylines like Diaclone and Microchange, and the odd additions like Jetfire being a VF-1 Valkyrie from Macross. The original Transformers cartoon and movie was produced and written in the U.S., but animated by Toei in Japan, though later seasons of the were done by South Korean studios like AKOM. Then there's tons of actual Japanese anime series like Headmasters, Super-God Masterforce, Victory, Beast Wars II and Neo, Car Robots and the Unicron Trilogy (Armada, Energon and Cybertron).

Did you guys know Peter Cullen is 83? And there's going to be another film with Optimus Prime as a central character. Most fans can't imagine anyone else voicing him so I wonder if they're going to have to find a way to write Optimus out of the franchise (properly and canonically of course) if they wanna keep it going. Robots retire too.

You DO know that Chris Hemsworth is going to be voicing Optimus in Transformers One, right? And there are others too like Alan Tudyk who voiced Earthspark's Optimus, Jake Tillman Foushee who voiced Optimus in Rescue Bots Academy, and David Kaye who voiced him in Animated.

Don't get me wrong, I get your point. Peter Cullen is the most well known voice for Optimus. No different from Mayumi Tanaka who voices Luffy. But, and I hate to say this, voice actors are replaceable. They won't retire the character or write him out of the franchise. The voice actors will retire, sure, but the characters can be given new voices.

And just like how I feel they should replace Luffy's actress with somebody else in the One Piece remake I think they should also do the same with Optimus. It's time for somebody else to hold the position as the new Optimus Prime. After all I'm for the newer generation taking over from the old guard.

In addition to Cullen not voicing plenty of versions of the characters Transformers anime tend to have really bad and inaccurate dubs. As much as I like Garry Chalk and David Kaye as Optimus and Megatron in Micron Legends' dub (Armada) the script was heavily changed along with a lot of plot points and also had a lot of unfinished animation that the Japanese version didn't suffer from The less said about Masterforce's old Omni dub and Car Robots' dub (RID) the better as well. Hopefully a new anime won't suffer from similar fates since edited-for-TV dubs seem to be a thing of the past these days.

It's optimistic of you guys to assume this would be anything substantial enough to dub to begin with. I'm expecting, at best, an animated short.

That’s what Gridman started with. The hope is this gets their foot in the door like with Gridman, either to do a full on original series as the mainline series a few years down the road, or to do what War for Cybertron tried and failed to do, be an adult targeted series with the characters. Granted, the latter case might just see them adapting the Energon Universe, but on the other hand, a Studio Trigger Energon Universe anime would be incredible.
