and frankly, if we were to "properly" review hentai, I'd basically be publishing a bunch of articles that describe how quickly the critic managed to finish jerkin' it based on the relative "quality" of the sex scenes. No thanks. Not for me. Not even something I want to visualize. My inevitable work-related suicide would come much quicker

Very amusing - and insightful - response. There really is no other way to judge a hentai series, is there?

I applaud ANN for having the decency to refrain from reviewing hentai. There is simply no need. With only one reason it exists, all a potential purveyor of such material needs to know is "Is there a lot of explicit sex scenes?"

As for One Piece, although I like shounen I stayed away from it due to all the news I read concerning the terrible dub. Also, at the time I didn't have the willpower to sit through another long and drawn out show. However, times have changed, I've got little else to watch at the moment, and with a better dub I may just give it a go. Though I'll have to skip the theme song each and every episode.

One more thing. Reading the atrocious spelling and grammar of some of the posters is headache inducing. They are that bad. If I were fielding the questions, I would not reply unless it was of sufficient quality. I wouldn't even place them as the flake of the week, as people who cannot write properly are dime-a-dozen on the internet. They simply do not amuse me anymore.

So then, your reply to the "Indignant Armchair Quarterback" was well done, but spare a thought for those who struggle to read through the original question, such is the state of the spelling and grammar.

Ta.

Note: edited for single (SINGLE, not chronic) grammatical mistake.

You should make that into a real book...maybe use a magazine format to save money. Then when it's done you can sell it or take donations for copies at all the cons the ANN staff go to. I mean the best way to observe these creatures is in their wild habitat (a con) right? Very Happy Think of it as a giant field study and like you're on safari.

To be perfectly honest I think I liked the One Piece rap.
*cries into hands*

I will not be surprised if all of the types of fan in the field guide reproduce asexually. Cool
I wish you'd give examples, but i'd be afraid of those people you mentioned.

As for the kittens, i'm digging the one in the bottom left corner. You can't see much of him but damn, he looks relaxed.

English dubs?

Best: Princess Tutu.
Worst: Genma Wars. In fact, Genma Wars was just funny all around.

Funny as always. Laughing

Awesome. Cool When given the choice between anime and manga, how can you possibly choose one over the other? They're both great in their own ways! Smile

Great, hilarious column as usual (though it would help if the people who sent most of these letters would LEARN HOW TO WRITE A FORMAL E-MAIL, dammit). And I would totally buy a copy of A Field Guide to Anime Fans.

So next week's Answerfan e-mails will likely be responses on how everyone loves the dubs of Cowboy Bebop, The Big O, Fullmetal Alchemist (ugh, don't see how that one's popular), Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone complex, and Gundam Wing and hates the dubs of One Piece, Cardcaptor Sakura, Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, any localized script dub anime, or anime dubbed before 1992?

Love the "field guide" answer, by the way.

On One Piece: "Ask John" over at AnimeNation addressed that exact same issue just last week. The short version? He concluded that One Piece, even with a better dub, would probably never be very successful in America because pirates just aren't special and different enough in the minds of American viewers, who have been exposed to them on a regular basis all their lives. Fantastic martial arts, OTOH, are far more exotic, which at least partly explains why DBZ and Naruto have been vastly more successful.

For Manga vs. Anime, I side with those who spoke up about anime having more effective emotional impact than manga because of the addition of music and voice acting as support.

For the new topic, I have to go with Fantastic Children as the worst. There have arguably been worse-performed dubs (Iczer-One and Green Green immediately come to mind), but no dub I've ever heard has done a more effective job of dragging down what was otherwise very good material. I'd be hard-pressed to come up with a single best choice, but some or all of Black Lagoon, Fullmetal Alchemist, Kodocha, Cowboy Bebop, Spirited Away, and Full Metal Panic! Fumoffu? would have to be in that discussion.

And really, does anyone other than fanatical purist Naruto fans actually genuinely think its dub is terrible? Anyone who thinks it belongs in the same category as the three I mentioned above in terms of awfulness clearly has not heard the English dub on any of those.

EDIT: Somehow I completely forgot to mention Hellsing (both the TV series and the OVA) amongst the top-end dubs.

I hope we'll get to hear about some lesser-known good dubs instead of the standard five or six that always come up. Although I agree with you about FMA; watching that one was pretty rough, and not just because I'm a Paku Romi fangirl.

EDIT: My computer finally loaded the One Piece rap. Hoboy. Why does the song have to, like, explain everything?

At least the Shaman King intro made a vague attempt at being subtle and poetic....Or at least as subtle as you can get while screaming the name of the show five or six times. I still get that stuck in my head >.<

Yup I pretty much agree with that list of overplayed "well done dubs". Looking back at Gundam Wing, it was just a so so show but even now I really love it because of the actors.

So to get some great ones out there that weren't all on Toonami/Adult Swim: FLCL, Kamichu! and Haibane Renmei. Simply put, almost every character I hear in these is perfect. They fit, they act and have chemistry(while probably not even seeing eachother anytime during recordings). I'm in the middle of Kamichu! right now and normally I find young characters(mostly girls) to be especially annoying most of the time. They're given way too sweet and high but slightly raspy voices that only serve to annoy me. Kamichu! couldn't be more far from this. Haibane Renmei somewhat shares that, and some of the cast as well.

FLCL is just one of my favorite dubs ever as well as anime. The actress playing Naota might as well be a 10 year old boy going through crazy events for how well the part was done.

I guess this question will get a lot of answers and participation atleast but really, almost all anime has an adequate if not good dub that it seems fruitless to go over the list.

*pats shoulder* There, there... I liked it too. (Then again, I've been known to watch infomericals for entertainment value. I like the Magic Bullet one. Very Happy )

I worry for anyone who'd actually want to read hentai reviews... I always thought the point of porn was the porn- if you're not finding anything to "distract" you from the dearth of story, why even bother?

As far as bad dubs go... I got Garzey's Wing as a late birthday present the other day. Hoo-boy, they weren't kidding on that one! Laughing

Magic Bullet? Shocked What's that?

Flake:
Could that Flake Person actually enter his/herself into the encyclopedia if he/she really wanted to be in there? I don't think there's any shame in doing that. IMDB lets actors put up their profiles on their site, I think. Hmm, have a blast Lenne Smile

One Piece:
WOW! Ok, that's the first time I saw the intro, and I think it's funny! Enjoyable, too Very Happy but funny haha.

Hey, Answerfans!:
I was so worried when I saw what question came up last week Anime hyper I thought maybe people were going to go crazy. But, the responses seemed to come off very well thought. I enjoyed reading them Anime smile yayy!! I can't wait to hear people's responses to the next question Smile I've been wondering what people thought of dubs.

*hugs the flaky kitty*

Well, I would say that there are some hentai with decent stories, such as Wet Summer Days and ONE: True Stories, which check in with a grand total of one sex scene per episode. Not really enough to get off on. However, hentai like this are few enough in number to be statistically insignificant in the overall range of hentai. And for every series like Bible Black that draws acclaim for animation quality, you get at least 5 or 6 bargain-basement low-budget hunks-o-junk that have that "one specific purpose" in mind. So in short, I don't see anything wrong with ANN not reviewing hentai, since statistically speaking 0% of them are worth reviewing.

So, to conclude, no, we don't cover hentai, and no, we won't be covering it in the future. I'm aware that Bamboo has covered one or two titles in the past in Shelf Life, but as I mentioned before, those were one-off reviews done solely for the comedy value and will not be reappearing. So there you have it. No porn on ANN.

Oh come on, i'm sure there are a few discriminating hentai buyers that would like to know the subtle differences in how the VA's can rapidly scream their lungs out vs. going sensual and slow. And the settings, the premise, how School Girl Kamakaze Tentacle Rape is vastly superior to Black School Girl Shibari Orgy Fest, etc., etc.

I kinda feel the same way too. Even the Localization was dead on. Instead of going far out in the translation, FLCL at least attempted to keep it with direct USDM representatives.

Zalis116:

Would Kite be considered hentai?

Yes I am talking about the SE version, but because most would agree that the story was the better part of it, would it?

I guess the technical answer is yes, but if so wouldn't it still merit a review?

But your right, these types are few and far between, plus ANN already reviewed that one.

Oh god... that rap song.... When I first heard that I stared at it dumbfounded.

Hey, I'd read a book about all interesting species the internet produces.
