I actually enjoyed the series when it was on Cartoon Network, sad to hear I can't buy the series.

Hopefully they'll give it the Prince of Tennis or Buso Renkin treatment and release box sets instead of singles.

I guess everyone hates this show, it aired on YTV, and Cartoon Network, before being pulled, and in the case of YTV, most likely canceled. Things like this, not telling us what the hell is going on with Zatch Bell, and still being one of the few companies to still release Dub-Only Discs for series(Zatch Bell), makes me hate Viz even more.

Let's face it people, these are kids shows. They're not even as popular as Naruto or One Piece. Hell, even One Piece isn't as popular as I wish it was. Here we have a problem. The anime market is set up as a niche market, where fans pay extra amounts of money for more obscure shows. Yet stuff like Mar or Zatch Bell or even One Piece are kids shows. They need to sell to kids. Are parents gonna pay the higher anime prices for a kids show? Not likely. Honestly, I really can't blame them. Not sure if you can blame the US company. It's almost a problem of the market itself and the rut it's gotten in where it's become standard to charge so much for anime.

If people aren't buying the sets because of Viz's "creative differences" in handling the DVD distribution, then I can understand that. After all, why make the Japanese OP and ED an extra?
But if MÄR isn't selling because it isn't popular, then that's a damn shame. I really really enjoyed MÄR from the 15 or so episodes that I've seen of it on YTV. The dub cast also did a superb job and treated it like the Shonen series that it is.
I also don't want to believe that YTV chose to cancel MÄR because of bad ratings. Us Canadians are willing to give all anime series a chance so long as it entertains us well and doesn't insult our intelligence like 4Kids One Piece and Knights of the Zodiac did.

Mar was great - glad I saw it all by fansubs. This is why I still say fansubs serves a purpose. And now I have yet again another series in my collection that has not been finished by the US companies. This is one of the few that I actually bought the volumes rather than waiting for the box set / thinpack to come out. I am tired of this nonsense of not releasing the full series. I refuse to buy non full series anymore. It's a waste of my money.

Perhaps, but the trend has been that shows that have been extensively localized (ie: replaced BGM, US-style editing, replaced opening and ending themes) currently tend to perform worse than less localized ones. The fact that Zatch Bell and MAR were run back-to-back with shows that haven't been extensively localized rather than more appropriate timeslots marketed to younger audiences might've hurt their performance on YTV as well.
Of course, I don't think any of us know the actual rationale behind that decision. What I can tell you is the fact that the DVDs haven't been selling probably has more to do with Viz's shoddy handling of them.

I hope so as well. While I was not interested in this series, I am disgusted everytime I hear of a local release not finishing it's DVD run.
*looks at 4 Geneon boxes that will likely never be filled, and 1 that only might be.*

Forgive me, but I doubt you speak for all Canadians. Also you might want to believe broadcasters in Canada don't care about ratings, but that doesn't make it true.

However if people aren't buying the singular DVDs then things like this happen... so saying "I refuse to buy non full series anymore" really doesn't help the situation.

Even so, the Naruto uncut DVDs don't even have that as an extra. I enjoyed Mar when it aired on Toonami, but when it became a Jetstream exclusive, I lost interest.
Viz can at least give a reason why the release is being canceled. They owe the fans that much.

i think the bottom line with any reason a series is canceled is the sales can't justify the cost. though many in the anime community believe a series is great and all, it's only that good when it's free. when you have to put money down for it that seems to be a different case. toonami and jetix cater to a larger market outside the niche anime community. sad thing is it didn't appeal to the average american audience.

According to an update on their site, AOD says
Quote: | VIZ has stated that, "We have made the decision to discontinue this title to make room for some new releases on our upcoming dvd roster." |
Which, in my opinion, is a rather lame excuse.

The real scary part about this is that Viz may now decide to stop dubbing the series because of this. After all, why bother spending all this money doing a series that has proven not to be marketable for them? So the fans might wind up only getting the first year of episodes (up to aprox. ep 50-52) & the rest wind up in limbo. They're currently at ep 47 on Toonami Jetstream, so we'll find out soon what fate holds for MAR.
A similar situation has already happened with the Prince of Tennis, which has already stopped showing new episodes on Jetstream after ep 50. MegaMan: Star Force has also stopped after 13 eps. At the very least I hope PoT continues.
