Guess I’ll start the manga from the beginning when I get round to it
The lesser yokai were adorable!
There was something about the lighting that felt off?

I felt this was one of the worst adaptations I’ve seen lately. I liked the use of colors, but that was about it. The story was not fleshed out well, so I constantly felt like it was just a monster of the week style anime that rarely developed the overarching plot. Nue in particular felt much more unappealing than his manga counterpart. Himari falling in love with Aoi felt contrived at best. Himari herself was quite weak and flat as a character. She rarely did anything aside from constantly say “Aoi” and look dumbfounded. And her powers are never actually described or explained. She just has some through her family bloodline.
I dropped this, then finished it because it was a train wreck that I couldn’t keep my eyes off of. So disappointing.

I'm probably biased as a fan of the manga but I thought the anime was pretty solid and enjoyable.
The production values weren't amazing but serviceable and while a fairly straightforward and simple Shojo fantasy show I found the characters endearing and it hit all its major beats well.
Himari is a very likeable and surprisingly capable Heroine and her romance with Aoi was cute.
I only wish we were getting a second cour to finish up the manga's story.

I think that's unfair to Himari. Practically every episode after the first two Himari is the one that helps them get out of whatever mess they're in because of her go-getter and never give up attitude.

You’re right about that. I’m not sure what I’m trying to say, so I’ll have to think about that some more. But you definitely could play a drinking game with the number of times she calls Aoi’s name and you’d be drunker than Elle King during her Dolly Parton tribute performance.
Random question: why does Nue say not to look at him during the opening credits? I vaguely remember him saying this to Himari, but it’s hard not to look at a peacock when it’s being flashy. And I’m pretty sure he never said it to her again after the one time.

I feel like "saying your love interests name multiple times" is kind of a given in this genre .
I think it's for aesthetic and context on how Aoi feels about his Nue transformation.

Lmao that’s true, but several times I found myself singing Mariah Carey’s “Obsessed” while watching this show
That makes sense. It’s just a weird thing to put into the opening credits and then to not hear him say anything about it again. Clearly any nuance was lost in translation haha.

Thanks for the review. I agree. I gave this series three episodes and was struggling to stay awake during all of it. I was hopeful but disappointed at the end of three eps.
