Thought this was already a thing announced a couple years ago. I guess this publishing deal was just a temporary thing, and now it's more set in stone for the long term?

It's two seperate things technically. The previous deal is Yen Press publishing print editions of our digital licenses. This announcement is Yen Press (through their distributor Hachette) distributing our print editions we produce ourselves (like Bookworm). |

It means J-Novel Club's physical releases will be distributed through the same channels as Yen Press's physical releases, and does not imply anything beyond that. |

Well, I really hope that's not the case, but JNC's business model is, for me at least, a shining example of how things should be done. Time and time again I wish that they'd been able to acquire titles whose translations have been mangled by various publishers, even others in the Kadokawa group, but with JNC you can discuss the pre-pub versions with the translators themselves. And as for DRM, there are constant reminders in the news as to why this is a bad thing for consumers. I am only willing to buy non-DRM ebooks/manga and physical books because I know that neither of those can legally be "stolen" back by publishers. |

I hope it doesnt delay and very much hope it might improve australian physical releases. I know it takes a bit because of the legislation requiring books sold in Australia to be printed in Australia. I just hope the arrangements wont be additionally delayed. Waiting 4 months to half a year behind America can be painful.

I'm sorry but it's unlikely this will help at all. Hachette is a bigger, even more international distributor than our previous one, but Australia is a nigh intractible issue for physical publishers no matter the scale. Any book that sells <10,000 copies overall is nearly impossible to sell into Australia and make any profit for anyone. One possibility is print on demand, but with light novels you have the color illustrations which make using POD not possible currently unless you're willing to accept an inferior product to the rest of the world. |
