Wow,I didn't know that manga is worth so much in Japan that you can get out of debt by stealing it's and selling it's to bookstores. That is like stealing a truck full of Twinkies and reselling it's to Walgreens. There are better ways to go it's you are willing to steal to get out of debt. What robbing a bank wasn't an option.

Question:

That $500 manga. Was that like a rare, or hyperlimited release? Or is that meant as a total tally of all of the manga he stole combined?

Are you joking? It sounds like you're saying that he should go to jail for stealing them all at once, yet he shouldn't if he steals them one at a time. It also wouldn't help his debt if he took his time and waited to sell the manga back.

That's five bucks a volume, mate.

Ah, I see. The way it's worded makes it sounds like 2 of them were really valuable or something.

Quote:
He is suspected of stealing Detective Conan, Hana Yori Dango, and other manga worth about 60,000 yen (US$500)
Yes I realize what other means, but still it makes those two sound more valuable.

But now I realize they had to mention them, because this is ANN and not a standard news site. Therefore without that sentence there would be no relevance to manga or anime. It would just be a bookstore robbery.

of course it's 500 dollar total silly. I don't think many people would mistaken it for 2 manga only.

When you're in debt, it doesn't matter how little the value is, many people will pawn off their funiture and jewerys for little value. 100 manga isn't a lot of manga at all, but that doesn't mean he can hit up more manga store. And your analogy of twinkies and walgreen didn't even make sense. Twinkies in a truckload (big rigs) are worth about 10,000+ in resell value to stores.

What makes you think they would be "more valuable" then? Detective Conan costs ¥398-410 per volume, and Hana Yori Dango has always been ¥410 per volume. ¥410 has been the standardized list price of shinshoban-sized manga tankōbon (105 x 173 mm) published by Hitotsubashi Group for many years.

It's you get to the point that you are in so debt that you are willing to steal. Then what the point of petty their. I would doubt that 500 dollars will better his situation.

I think this guy's truly epic maneuver was taking them in the middle of the afternoon in broad daylight.

Quote:
US$500

¥410 x 101 = $375.72
Quote:
60,000 yen

¥60,000 / ¥410 = 146

Coupled by the fact that it did not explicitly say total value. Which admittedly was an assumption on my part. So I was simply confused by the wording, and the numbers not quite adding up didn't help either. I also didn't take into account that certain bookstores might charge a premium price, hence the $5 a volume.

Adding to the confusion was the fact that in the States there are many single volume comic books that are worth hundreds of dollars, sometimes thousands.

All of this added to me thinking he was trying to steal a rare book or comic.

Obviously I was mistaken.

The first time or the second? Laughing

He allegedly took about 50 volumes out of the store in a plastic bag, hid them in a parking lot, and then went back to get more.

Makes me wonder how many trips he would have made if he hadn't been spotted by the guy at the bicycle store. And how oblivious did the bookstore people have to be to miss the guy with the big plastic bag of loot?

The only way that this could be sillier would be if he'd been wearing one of those Zorro-style burglar masks around his eyes to show he was a thief like in cartoons.

Sometimes you hear about this, and wonder "why didn't they have a job?". Then you remember they did something stupid like steal 100 volumes of manga at once, and think no one'ld notice, and I guess that explains it.

Considering that used stores pay less than 15% of the books original price in many cases. Unless the situation is different in Japan.
