One thing noted in a Kyodo piece about this is that Johnny's consulted with nearly 500 victims and of those over 300 are seeking compensation:

So...YIKES. They have a lot to give out.

Wow. I don't know of any instances where a talent agency went financially-bankrupt because of #MeToo-type claims against them but J&A certainly might be the first one I know of.

I do not know if it there is a bit of a translation error or not but if the company rebranded it as SMILE UP, that seems a little off putting to me, given the circumstances.

So it looks like the company name will be completely removed and the company itself shut down and restructured into a new company. Well that pretty much assures its legacy as the studio that supported a monster.

I am not really sure if the restructuring will really do good tough, if most of the people that worked in JA will still work in the new company.

I am not sure i am understanding this right. does it specify who will take over? is it the same people that are still working, will it have the same president and such?

Yep, saw this yesterday through my usual Japanese's English-language news like Japan Times, Japan Today, and NHK World Japan app. So the reckoning has just begun I see.

Smile Up may not last long with that level of litigation coming, no idol agency has the billions needed for compensation of this scale.

Has there been any reporting on talent leaving the agency since the scandals came out? I don't know how much of a thing that is in Japan, but you'd kind of expect everyone to leave for different agencies.

Not sure if there's more but Junichi Okada (formerly of V6) is one as revealed today (yesterday in this time zone).

Okada has the right idea, maybe he can poach some talent and have a decent start.

Johnny & Associates Changes name to Smile Up
as part of the company's "vision" to earn back fans' trust.

"Oh, when it all! It all falls down!
And when it falls down, who you gon' call now?"

Apparently... Smile Up!

I know that's not the best name they could think of.

Well, I appreciate them ditching the Johnny name for good. The new name might be somewhat inappropriate given the circumstances but hey, it's better than Johnny's.

Seems like an okay name to me. They're trying to move on and distance themselves from a monster.

You know this is a big deal because the rebrand was the subject of an expose for the Hollywood Reporter. It also points out the rename is viewed rather skeptically.

Yep, I just saw the article just now, and I wanted to link but I guess you did the job for me. I'll quote some selected part of the article:

Patrick Brzeski of The Hollywood Reporter wrote:
But some members of an advocacy group made up of victims — calling itself the “Johnny’s Sexual Assault Victims Association” (JSAVA) — were sharply critical of the plans unveiled Monday.

Shinichi Kimura, a former dancer and singer who has alleged he was assaulted at the age of 18 by Kitagawa in the mid-1990s, said it was inappropriate for Johnny’s to simply create a new entity to house its business.

Talent should be transferred to a totally different agency and Johnny’s entertainment activities should be discontinued altogether,” Kimura told the Tokyo Shimbun newspaper.

Others have slammed the company’s rebranding effort.

Naming the company for compensation Smile Up is like asking people to wear white to a funeral. It’s ridiculing the victims,” said a JSAVA member and alleged victim who chose to remain anonymous by using the pseudonym “Izumi.”

Despite the rebrand, it's gonna take a long while for Smile Up to regain the trust of the numerous companies which decided to go separate ways with it

"Yeah yeah, so Johnny raped a bunch of you guys when you were little boys, and then branded you as Little Johnnys, but its all over now, Smile Up!!!"

Ugh, I hate it already.

Just burn it to the ground, this company has no business existing no matter what it rebrands it self as.
