I think the target audience is supposed to be VTuber fans in general. Yes they are using Kizuna Ai specifically as the hook, but I think they wanted to expand beyond her to VTuber fans in general, hence why Kizuna herself is cast as the scion of VTuber emergence and not really "in" the show. This is furthered by the use of so much VTuber-style animation bits throughout. I think the focus on music is because that's what Kizuna was mostly known for at the end of the day (as opposed to whatever VTubers nowadays do) and because idol anime are a simple formula to work with. We do get glimpses of that other stuff - attempts at sort of variety-show segments Miracle puts on - but music is the focus, and idol anime sell big in Japan. Which gets to the final wedge of target audience - I think the international audience was a clear secondary concern, if at all. I leave only a bit of room for international audience consideration only because I would have thought that, given reception in Japan, if it wasn't a concern at all this second season announcement would have come at the actual end of the final episode, not left hanging (baring other concerns that would have delayed such an announcement). The number of comments I saw at the start of the series of people who heard of Kizuna Ai but knew nothing about VTubers tells me that if there was some hope of growing recognition overall, that it was not a strong focus. Its main focus seemed to be to attract as many folks already somewhat familiar with VTubers back to "the original VTuber" and reacquire/grow that base for future projects. |
