lol Yea, nobody wants to see a Russian Figure Skater to represent someone who fights for Love and Peace.

The general public doesn't care for the innocents within the country who are against the war, celebrities or otherwise, so there was no way that anyone involved in the show were going to risk a huge loss from hosting the show. The show was planned years before the war started, and even if the war never happened, it probably would've gotten canceled anyway which is a huge shame... |

Why should her nationality matter except that people can be shallow and bigoted? |

Hopefully it can comeback. Just a series of unfortunate events, but if not, maybe some changes here and there to tackle it again.

Generalization much? Have you never heard of Russian people who protest against the war? Even if it means getting stalked, arrested and tortured for it? |

They did, though, and that's not what the announcement said. They specifically said that the "unstable global situation" makes it extremely difficult for the performers and the staff to prepare. After discussing the situation they came to the conclusion that at this rate it would be impossible to present a show up to their high standards by the opening date. Which is a very diplomatic way of saying that yes, it's mostly due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and the general unpredictability of the situation it continues causing. (I'm sorry to keep harping on this, but this is why it's important for these articles to be written by someone more than "somewhat proficient" in Japanese. Mistranslating titles is one thing, but mistranslating/misrepresenting official announcements is a different thing...) Even if the lead performer being Russian wasn't kind of toxic right now, who knows what the world is going to be like by summer? Will the war escalate? Will new sanctions be placed, perhaps ones involving travel, etc. of non-oligarch citizens? Would Medvedeva and her staff be able to get visas? etc. It's simply impossible to plan that far ahead in the current circumstances, so it's better to just cancel now rather than sink more money and effort into the show and then potentially having to cancel in the last minute.
Honestly - not much anti-war protesting is happening right now in Russia. Not to say that there aren't Russians (who are still in Russia) who don't support the war, I'm personally in contact with some of them due to my job, and I'm sure there are many more. But frankly, the sad truth is that most people still in Russia either support the war, or just don't really care either way. Russia is a huge country, most people are simply not affected all that much, and the state of freedom of information (or rather, the lack thereof) means that those who don't go out of their way to get a VPN and find non-propaganda information online, are simply not aware of what's actually going on. Those who oppose the war and the system have either already left the country, or are lying low, because honestly, as important as free speech is, not everyone wants to actually die for it (literally or figuratively). Also, frankly, as unfair as it may be toward Russians who don't support the war, unfortunately having a Russian starring in a show like this, especially someone who has never spoken out or at least show any opposition against the war (as far as I'm aware), is absolutely not a good look right now. Look, I get it - I'm Hungarian. I have never in my life supported either Orbán or anyone from his groupies, in fact I'm an activist trying to work against the system, and I'd be offended if someone called me a fascist just because of my nationality. But even so I am part of this rapidly sinking ship on account of, well, living in it, and the current situation being what it is, it's inevitable that people look at an individual from a certain country and, consciously or not attach, certain associations to them. |
