Oh yeah, Cotton and Izuna were in Rondo of Swords...one of the odder (and less friendly,) SRPGs I've ever played. I'd forgot about that one.

The Microsoft thing would be laughable, if it didn't have potentially major ramifications even outside the games industry. It certainly seems like a very expensive corporate temper tantrum, but with that much money to throw around it could cause a lot of damage indeed. And it should be mentioned that Sony don't exactly have clean hands either- they seem to have fought hard for Final Fantasy to have at least timed exclusivity, and that's certainly a system seller- even if not to the CoD degree.

Edit: Also, neco-Arc reminded me- and I don't think it had been mentioned yet- that Melty Blood: Type Lumina has 2 new free characters....both from FGO. Some Melty Blood fans are a bit upset by this- why guest stars, and not characters from the prior Melty Blood games? I'm sympathetic; money talks, I know, but if you're adding 2 characters, why not do 1 for the possible converts and 1 for the old timers?

It does have the feeling of a "Hail Mary" argument but it's made very disconcerting when it's probably safe to assume that most of the recently appointed federal judges--the ones Microsoft say should be hearing the case--will likely be for undoing the FTC.

One point about Mahoyo is that it was supposed to have two sequels but underwhelming sales and an appearent decline in the Visual Novel market in Japan contributed to this becoming a lower priority in Type-Moon's production line. Even Tsukihime Remake, which was a damn success, didn't sell that much considering it's a Type-Moon VN and remake of one of the most important VNs ever made.
There have been more than a few interviews with Nasu where he mentions a desire to move on to RPGs or other styles of gaming so Mahoyo might end up being the epimote of VN visual quality.

GrimGrimoire: OnceMore is a fun time. It's not quite what most people expect from Vanillaware, but I recommend everyone at least give it a look.

Wizardry's traditional brick-to-the-face difficulty

Definitely not an understatement. I tried the PS3 Wizardy once. Three hours of building and outfitting a party only to be booted into a maze and have them all wiped out by the first group of bats, then starting over from scratch to have the same thing happen with every combination I tried. Best wishes to the higher beings who know how to play these things, but that didn't leave me inclined to ever buy another one.

I played the hell out of the old Melty Bloods, but four guest characters out of twenty-two is a hard complaint to sympathize with, especially when they're all free and French Bread already added the major new characters from the Tsukihime remake before they dipped into FGO. Everyone missing from old Melty Blood is either a variant on a character who's already in Type Lumina, was already a guest character anyway, or was confirmed to not be returning due to timeline changes before TL even launched.

Just as an fyi, the Microsoft lawsuit isn't really BS. The FTC has always had some amount constitutional dubiousness about it - any legal scholar worth their salt wouldn't be dismissive. I mean just in 2022 the Supreme Court has already heard about structural and operational challenges to the admin body.

Microsoft's lawyers aren't that dumb. It's anyone's guess how the Court's will deal with it.

I had heard about this but had no sources. This is another indicative of a weakening of the VN market given that, outside of Type-Moon, 5pb was perhaps the biggest VN production company around.

In other news, the people at Digital Foundry said during a podcast that Nintendo was developing a Switch revision, the much-talked-about Switch Pro, but the company decided to cancel it. Now, people have been talking about a Switch Pro since 2018 or so, and even though some important news outlets have mentioned some details about it and that even some third-parties got development kits, I'm still on the doubting side. To be fair, maybe we could argue that some Switch games were in development for a hypothetical revision, I still remember many tech analysts claiming games like Mario+Rabbids 2 were running of Pro hardware, I still think the Switch's true successor will arrive by 2024.
Speaking about the Switch, it seems like a special edition OLED console for Tears of the Kingdom has been leaked. This could be a fake, but if nothing else it's just more evidence that TotK will definitely be coming out for the Switch next year.

-Microsoft: Dear lord, Microsoft didn't go this hard when they were hit with anti-trust practices decades ago. This is straight up villain nonsense; this is threatening to damage an important government agency just to expand their cultural power. Phil Spencer can miss me with his constant attempts to seem like a wholesome friend. I hope this deal flames out so badly MS is then investigated for acquiring Zenimax. MS needs to be taught a lesson.

-Wizardry: This reminds me that we need a new Etrian Odyssey. It's been far too long

I don't report on rumors for this reason, people have been going on about the "Switch Pro" since the original Switch's release. It's not a "prediction" when you've been saying it for the past six years, only you really think this one's the one. And for now, it makes no sense to make a revision because the Switch is just selling so well. Nintendo will likely make a new console to replace the Switch, but it won't be a Switch Pro. The Switch sells too well and has too much brand recognition to just get a minor update, to say nothing of the fact that Nintendo knows people will buy Switches sight-unseen. The millions of Switches sold were so people could play Switch games, not because people wanted high-fidelity experiences. Hence why there are Doom 2016 and Mortal Kombat 11 ports on the Switch.

(Also, I'm not ragging on you or anything--I'm in agreement with you. Switch Pro folks are just annoying at this point.)

Believe me, I feel you on this one. I think part of the problem is that it's hard to recapture the essence of Etrian Odyssey on anything besides a DS-style console. You need the touch-screen to draw the map, even if the games already had an auto-mapping feature. The Switch's single touchscreen just isn't precise enough for that. There have been other Nintendo DS games that have been reworked to other consoles, like The World Ends With You or Knights in the Nightmare. But so much of EO's experience hinges on the tactile sensation of the map on the bottom screen--it's not a fancy interface, it's literally half the game. And I think Atlus themselves doesn't know how to work around that. Sad

Fable, Blinx, & all their Kinect exclusive games were industry darlings alongside Halo, Forza, & Gears?

Jokes aside when then Microsoft become run by Extreme Conservative nut cases?
That court filing and it’s apparent intention is beyond ridiculous.

Actually the Switch is good enough for drawing a map on it. Case in point Super Mario Maker 2 (Fyi, I hate this sequel to the first, lots of Booers and a community that simply doesn't care about the soul that spent 8-12 hrs making lvs, the OG was MUCH better and a better community too). Also, the Switch's screen is about as big as the 3DS's when u combine the two screens together and remove the middle part seperating them, even if that were a concern, one could always run two screens side by side, so the main game is played on the left, while the map is on the right side of the screen and once again, the switch's screen width is on par with the 3DS screen so u can totes have the top screen on the left and the bottom screen on the right as I said. I only played EO4 demo (I believe it was 4) on the 3DS but I am certain this would work.

Microsoft may be a billion dollar corporation, however, in the console marketplace they're still third place, and with Activision, Xbox would be the third largest game company. While I think all later acquisitions should be held under extreme scrutiny, this specific one isn't much of a problem, especially considering that Activision supposedly wants to be bought, and Xbox has built up a fair amount of good will in recent years (mostly, the announcements of 70 dollar games is still BS).

The most amusing part of the Activision/Microsoft drama has been Sony and Microsoft both submitting official statements to the government sh*ttalking themselves and playing up the market power of their competitors.

While I'm not a fan of Microsoft accquiring Bethesda and Activision-Blizzard, Sony's responses have been very funny, especially regarding MS' 10-year commitment to bring CoD to Nintendo & Steam, Sony basically claimed that Nintendo's younger audience is not interested in FPS, that CoD on WiiU was a flop and that Switch could not run CoD easily and may never be able to. Now, there's some true about the Switch's hardware not being able to run modern CoD, but it can easily run a port of the games from the PS3 and Xbox 360 era, not to mention that this is a 10-year old deal so the Switch successor may be able to run it, also most of the Switch userbase are adults and we all know that CoD is played by tons of younger players and publishers know it as well. Yes, CoD was a a flop, but most third-party games on that console flopped, the Wii and DS received various downgraded CoD ports.
