Cheaper to do it yourself:
Return ticket to Japan: $950
6 Nights hotel in Tokyo: $900 (less if you go with a business hotel and/or split the cost with another person).

However, I still highly recommend these trips, particularly for the first time visitor. Having a tour guide show you around and add to the information available at various sites you visit is a big plus. Having someone show you how to get around in Tokyo the first time you're there is also a big plus.

My first trip to Tokyo was with a similar tour, and I don't regret it at all. Now that I know my way around and know how to tailor my days to my wants & needs, I have no use for a tour, but I know that many PJT patrons return with PJT more than once.

Plus, the February tour isn't just Tokyo -- it also includes the Sapporo snow festival, so there are two round-trip air tickets included in there. The April tours are just Tokyo and are much lower priced -- quite close to the "do-it-yourself" cost quoted by Tempest (which doesn't count buses, trains, tour guides or admission fees -- all of which are included in the PJT tour price).
