I always, always, ALWAYS look forward to new Buried Treasures. It's my favorite article on the site!!

Crusher Joe sounds... interesting. I'll probably check it out at some point.

I liked the Crusher Joe dub, too, because it reminded me a lot of the 70s Buck Rogers. The follow-up OVAS were kinda weak, though.

This has been one of my all time favorites and I never get tired of talking about Yas. Here is a thread from last year covering Crusher Joe.

animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=322674

Bandai's recent Tide Line Blue series has a real Yas feel to it for me, and the girl even looks sort of like a Yas design to me. I also remember thinking that Nadia borrowed many elements from Yas' Giant Gorg when it was released. I still wonder why he isn't highly regarded in the States. I remember being a bit upset when his name didn't make it to the best directors polls at the beginning of the year.

Great buried treasure segment on a really old classic. Man, talk about being from my HS days. This was the show everyone talked so much about. And I had yet to sit down and watch the original movie. Though I've seen maybe one OVA. The planet of the "death spheres". I had considered picking this up but never got around to it. Considering what I've been tracking down so far I guess I should grab this one while it's still around. Because I did enjoy it. See what happens when you take to long?

I hope that someone re-licenses this title and re-releases it in a remastered format. (Considering that I think 'Animeigo' might have released it twice already. I mean they re-released 'Ah! My Goddess'). It's too good a feature to just be left buried. Anyone wanting to take a look at what made anime during the 70's and 80's so entertaining should have that chance to see and own such features. Wink

I remember picking this up August 06 for $9.99 at TRSI, then Animeigo closed it out for $5.98. Talk about a steal at those prices. I thoroughly enjoyed it and now you guys are making me want to watch it again. Very Happy

AAAAAAAAAARGH!!! THAT IS A STEAL!!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

Well, I guess if I'm looking to get it I'm going to have to do some real soul searching. Why oh why didn't I pick it up then? What was I waiting for? The trees to rain money???

And I just wrote them today and got a response that they no longer have the rights anymore. They extended it for as long as they could. That's it.

The character designs look very similar to Star Blazers. This sounds good. Too bad it's probably impossible to get to the UK.

Great article. I'm on the fence about "great film." Sometimes I agree with that pretentious guy at the silent film, sometimes I agree with the internet nerd proclaiming Star Wars as a masterpiece of cinema. In any event, I'd love to see this movie, and hope that I get the chance to.

I love Crusher Joe. I got the movie plus the OVAs at a comic store for ten bucks (Ultimate Weapon: Ash is the coolest of the three, IMO).

I'm hoping that if the Dirty Pair novels sell well over here Dark Horse would consider publishing the Crusher Joe novels, as well.

What an absolutely fantastic movie and an equally impressive and understanding review of the film. My hat is off to you Justin. You seem to be one of the few people left in the anime community who isn't so hooked on the next best thing that they can appreciate something that was done before 2004. The animation in this film is so fluid and impressive it's not even funny...definitely Sunrise at it's best.

As a side note, if you pay attention to the end credits they give special designer credit to a TON of famous artists like: Shinji Wada (creator of Sukeban Deka), Katsuhiro Ohtomo (I don't have to spell this one out do I?), Akira Toriyama (another obvious one); Fujihiko Hosono (uniform designer on Dirty Pair TV, artist on Crusher Joe manga, creator of Bio Hunter, creator of Sasuga no Sarutobi); Keiko Takemiya (creator of Toward the Terra); Rumiko Takahashi (yet even more obvious) and Yumiko Igarashi (creator of Candy Candy). That's an incredible line up of star talent creators and artists working on this film. Anyway, like I said before, great review of an awesome movie.

Here I thought I was getting a deal when I paid $15.07 for it at TRSI! I can't believe that it's been over 20 years since I first saw this film with my sister. I love the OST for this film. Yas has an amazing grasp on the human form and I love his very organic motions used in his films. I wish Arion was released here since I love both the manga and film.

At this point in time, $15-$20 is what you'll be paying now trying to track it down. Which is what it's going for if you can locate it. Be glad you got your copy. Crying or Very sad

Crusher Joe is actually one of my very favorite sci-fi action movies ever, even outside of anime. I actually did a long bit on here on our podcast here, and I was very happy to hear that we had many, MANY people email us about how they went and picked it up and how much they enjoyed it. One person emailed us and said that they enjoyed it even more than Cowboy Bebop. I'm sort of sad that you didn't mention the OAVs which, as fantastic as the movie is, the OAVs are even better, especially the second one Ultimate Weapon: Ash. Ash, in particular, was actually played, raw, during Saturday night at Dragoncon many years ago and it caused a near riot from the crowd since the ending of it is so intense. Hopefully that's going to be a future Buried Treasure segment since those are worth talking about on their own.

I have rather impressed at the summary of the storyline for the movie since I found it to be quite a challenge to summarize that show since the plot line is rather complex, but not overly complex for the sake of complexity as one event moves logically to the next.

Glad to see this got a Buried Treasure segment but it's unfortunate that the DVD is so incredibly hard to find, since it's virtually impossible to find online and the best bet seems to be anime cons in their used/bargain bins.

It is great to hear people enjoying Crusher Joe still today. My name is Shaun O'Rourke and I provided the voice for "Ricky" in the 1997 dub of the film and the OVA's.

Out of all the anime work I have done this film is the one I hold dear in my heart. I recently acquired two hand painted cells from the film I intend on having framed alongside the dvd box set.

Be on the look out for new dubs from Coastal Recording Studio. Scott Houle's passion is still there and he is on fire to get other titles to the masses.

Take Care

Being reminded of having bought this on LD back when AnimEigo was getting rid of 'em.

Aside from the dub made for AE for their DVD's prior to going out-of-print, there had been another dub made of the film, but of less-than-stellar, downright kiddified insanity from Jim Terry and his crew, made apparently for Enoki Films USA in the late 80's, but saw home video releases in the UK and Australia.

Check out the Op and Ed feature music by THE BULLETS (I dare you)!
