They're treating it like it's The Anarchist's Cookbook when it's a silly AND informative book about doing science stuff at home. Unless there are lurid sex scenes hidden in these, this is nonsense.

This is a rural, heavily-agricultural prefecture that is also the least-populated in Japan. Minority rule at its finest -- imagine North Dakota or Wyoming getting a book banned/delisted in the entire USA. Actually no, don't give them any ideas, I'm sure they'd love to pull that trick off.

I came close to suggesting that in my earlier post, but didn't want to get into politics.
Besides, I think the First Amendment would prevent that. Amazon.co.jp is concerned about violating a law that restricts distribution of media. Such laws are difficult to write around the First Amendment in the US. Politics aside, there is the question of monopoly, however. Amazon.com in the US can be fairly arbitrary about what they'll let into their e-reader (Kindle) stream --- look up the holes in the Kindle offerings for the Bakemonogatari manga, for example. Bookshops are free to put the books in their "restricted" section (some bookshops may only have a restricted section for books like this, I would imagine). Amazon.co.jp has only the blunt instrument of the R18 designation. Last edited by dm on Thu Sep 01, 2022 5:10 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Wait, so what exactly is in the book that could have gotten it banned? I can't imagine a Dr Stone novel has any actual 18+ content, but they gave such a non committal answer

These are not Dr Stone novels, they're a series of nonfiction books by the team that serves as science consultants on Dr Stone. From what I can see the books are about various exciting science-related stuff, and invite readers to get involved in related activities, eg. experiments, 3D printing things, constructing stuff... A randomly selected book I'm looking at actually has instructions on making things like tesla coils, diesel blasters, detonation cannons, cap "landmines" (like cap guns but without the "gun" part), collecting and cultivating poisonous plants, physics and chemistry experiments involving electricity and explosions, it actually has segments on "DIY fire making" and "survival and drugs" and so on... The note on the website makes a point of calling attention to precaution and being responsible, but if all of these books are like this one, honestly I can see how it could be a bit worrying... but even so, there are ways to make sure that kids have fun with these things under safe conditions, without actually banning the sale of the books. |

Oh my bad then
So basically the parents decided that safety notes weren't enough, pretty ridiculous but not unexpected. |

Again? This one doesn't even have ecchi or covers sex. It's not even real Poor Man's James Bond either from what I see, just label it for adults (It's something university students and teachers should be messing with anyway) and don't censor the book.

Pathetic action by amazon. It harmed the whole country because of a prefecture. Freedom of speech is a joke these days or is confused with freedom to commit crimes.
Most likely now it can start a real witch hunt, because you just need a precedent. |

So, "Don't try this at home, or have help and use caution when attempting such activities." was not enough for these people calling for the ban, restriction, etc.? |

Did you read the article at all? SHD answered the first; as for the second, article states: "the book was deemed "harmful to youths" according to Tottori Prefecture law". The word "parent" isn't mentioned in the article, at all. This smells like government overreach, but let's not cry wolf like they are banning a popular manga or that "it's those dang parents complaining about manga again" |

I saw the words "Dr Stone" and missed "science consultant", sue me ok? I figured the parents had something to do with the council but I was wrong on that front too.

This happened back in February? I guess it can't be a response to Abe's assassination and people being worried about books that tell you how to make homemade bombs and weapon are kinda bad now. Surprised that kind of stuff was available at all
