I often read comments from readers who I assume were victims of childhood bullying that people who write stories centered on being bullied often don’t quite “get” how bullying really works on a peer-to-peer level. But as someone who was a weird kid with a lot of friends, I was well-insulated from any bullying that might’ve otherwise happened, and I’m often leery that bullying stories might lean into exaggeration for the sake of melodrama. So while I was already planning on reading this for the fantastical elements, I'm looking forward to seeing what this got so right about the experience, so, as difficult as this was, thank you for sharing.

While I've thankfully not been at the receiving end of any targeted bullying, as someone who was once close friends with a bully victim at a prestigious school, I can say that the experiences mentioned in Rebecca's review here – from the fact that teachers at school are consistently on the side of the bully simply because of their 'perfect student' exterior (in my case the bully didn't even have good manners, they simply have good grades), to the teachers' appeals of empathy for the bully once presented with irrefutable evidence of bullying, to the feeling of absolute helplessness on the side of the victim – are all 100% spot on. My bullied friend almost resorted to acts of violence since 'proper procedure' didn't get him the reprieve or justice he sought, but fortunately he was transferred to another school before that happened and has been in a much better place since.

Been there, done that ─ and I have the mental scars from it.
The pain never really goes away ─ it just becomes bearable.
Gonna have to buy this.

Lovely review, I’m conflicted now as to whether to read this sooner, or to wait for (director of Colorful and Miss Hokusai) Keiichi Hara’s upcoming anime movie adaptation.
