I haven't watched nor read a lot of the classic DB(Z) series and virtually nothing of the newer series, but the Red Ribbon Army Arc is one part I remember well from late 80s french TV and the manga because of Tao Pai Pai and the way he killed that one native indian kid's dad. It was horrifying and hilarous at the same time and I cheered for Goku when he beat that villain after having trained up in that ... what was it, a kind of tower with kami-sama on top? Yeah, I definitely liked that part.

It's nice to see the greatest manga of all time getting love, even though the article wasn't written for me. Big thank you to the author for using manga images and the actual character names.

If you're a Dragon Ball fan, you should check out all the arcs. But yeah, the Red Ribbon arc is pretty neat. I love Goku just plowing through the RR HQ like it's nothing.

Best arc in the series. And on the list of problematic things Toriyama has written and drawn, General Blue is on the low end. Toei aside, any stereotyping attributed to him is window dressing for a really cool character that, for the briefest of moments, does pose a threat to Goku. As a kid I literally shouted "NO!" when spoiler[Blue misdirects Goku at the fork in pathway when the underwater base is crumbling.]

the good thing about blue stereotyping is that, back in the late 80s and early 90s , gay stereotyping in the west was all about them either being feminine or drags, so even if blue was a stereotype for the east, for the west he was a breath for fresh air, showing that gay men could be manly too, no need to drop you masculinity to be gay and that was very positive for quite a few guys from my generation( who watched dragon ball as teenagers).

back to the article, not the kind of article i expected, but it's a really good one. making articles on interesting arcs of random ( or famous) anime looks like good content for this time. i will request sailor moon R.

After several years of interacting with the U.S. Dragon Ball fandom, I still find it hard to believe that nearly everyone was introduced to the franchise with the Saiyajin saga. I and many of my friends here in South America started watching Dragon Ball since the beginning, I actually remember that for my 5th birthday party in the late 90s the decorations were Dragon Ball themed, with images of kid Goku everywhere, I even had a cassette with the Spanish versions of Makafushigi Adventure and Romantic Ageru Yo. Cartoon Network reran the original Dragon Ball in the late 2000s and it was still pretty popular, and last week Crunchyroll announced that they would add the Neutral Spanish dub of DB to their platform as well.
Speaking of the Red Ribbon arc, I think it at that point the series became more action oriented, my favourite part was the final duel between Goku and Tao Pai Pai.

Calling - or at least singling out - Toriyama culturally insensitive is unfair. He portrayed non-Japanese and (yes it does matter) non-whites no differently from how dyed in the wool progressives like Tomino, Ishinomori and Tezuka did. Also, I want to say that it is better than how non-Japanese and non-whites are treated in modern anime. Especially since it is a regression from the groundbreaking ones that Bleach, Naruto (Killer B bashers ignore that the very sheltered Kishimoto actually was trying here), One Piece, Hunter x Hunter, Basquash (while male and adult characters are common, teen female "eye candy" characters like Miyuki are very rare), Soul Eater, Durarara etc. had just a few years back before anime and manga were being regularly distributed outside Asia.

While there are exceptions these days anime pretends as if the entire continents of Africa and Latin America flat out don't exist even in those with allegedly "global" settings and plotlines, or that they are somehow entirely populated by European and Asian people if they do. So a franchise like Mahouka won't even depict what an early 1980s anime like Macross did effortlessly. Plus all these isekai shows with only European and Asian characters. For all its other problems, at least Sword Art Online does avert this. The justification being "of course because it has a medieval fantasy European setting" which of course ignores things like MOORS, OTTOMANS, EGYPTIANS etc. being documented as very much present in Europe in that time period and oh yeah what are all the Asians doing there in that case? But what took the cake: To The Abandoned Sacred Beasts. Allegedly an American Civil War setting with no black people (slave or free).

So criticize Officer Black and Mr. Popo all you want: at least they were in the show. A lot better than A Certain Magical Index, a show allegedly about worldwide national and religious conflict which in addition to limiting "the world" to Asians and Europeans depicts African, Middle Eastern etc. deities as blue eyed blonde-haired teenage anime girls and who included a brief - and not flattering I might add - image of Barack Obama for the sole purposes of making a pun about Kuroko Shirai's name.

This is also the arc where I really started wondering about the morality of the flying nimbus.

Goku kills a *hell of a lot* of people here, but the nimbus doesn't seem to have any kind of problem with that.

It’s like not the people he killed over the course of the raid on RR headquarters were good people.

It’s not really that hard when you reconcile the fact that the original DragonBall dub by Harmony Gold wasn’t terribly popular or memorable. So when Z came to these shores and got popular like it did it supplanted the first series in notoriety and relevance.

Them being in the show doesn’t excuse the way at least Black was drawn the Popo thing never bothered me personally. Same way General Blue being in the series doesn’t excuse his even at the time tacky portrayal.
