Gantz!! Finally~ T^T and about time.
I was sure if Gantz was gonna be licensed, it'll be by none other than Dark Horse. This is the best licensing announcment in AX so far. |

I don't think Gantz has the same big audience as Berserk, but if it's finally been picked up, it's nice to know Dark Horse is finally serious about the manga market for once. I just hope we don't get lazy ad-libbing translations like we've been getting from Berserk as of late. But more importantly, I just want them to get Strain and Sanctuary next.

Wow, that's a lot of mature readers titles.... nice move, DH. the Ghost Talkers Daydream OVA seems to have been a decent hit for Geneon, so that's a nice expansion for fans of that series.

Dark Horse finally got Gantz after trying all this time, huh? That's cool. It's a hyper-violent manga with style and about zero substance, but that's part of its appeal because Oku pulls it off so well.
Now, with this and MPD Psycho coming over, I'd LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to see them license Ichi the Killer and The World is Mine. They would be tougher sells than the two previously mentioned ultra-violent manga, considering they're actually more thoughtful and would have more of an appeal to an older, more mature audience than the teenagers who lurv dem blood, guts, and tittaz, but I think it could be done (hell, ItK does have a cult following with the live-action movie adaption by Miike). If Dark Horse at least manages to release TWiM, then I'd be eternally grateful to them. From what little I've read it's very, very impressive satire from one of the greatest writers in manga, Hideki Arai, who is most well-known for his critically acclaimed epics as The World is Mine and Kiichi!.
... Huh?
I'll second Sanctuary. I'd like to read it, but volume seven of Viz's release seems all but obtainable. Edit: Fixed the tags. Last edited by HellKorn on Sun Jul 01, 2007 2:32 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Not really all that excited about the Gantz manga but I am certainly looking forward to checking out some of the Blood+ manga/novels. I mean maybe then shed some light on what happen to Saya (up to half way of Blood+ TV show)spoiler[after the tanker incident. Maybe it will also explain why Saya mysteriously fell in love with Haji for no reason.]
I wonder when Funimation is going to make some announcement, seeing as how they already told us about the One Piece Cast I wonder what else they have up their sleeves. |

Hellkorn: Gantz is one of those cult anime which probably did decent, but isn't significant like Berserk, or you'd be seeing cosplayers of it. (I'd imagine the same problem with licensing the Elfen Lied manga.) Berserk's done well enough that DH can afford to publish it at a bi-monthly rate, but I'd imagine DH would still release Gantz at a quarterly rate until they're sure it would make its money back. I think the Ichi manga would actually have a better chance than it, because the film would sell out in places it got screened, and because they could market it as a title similar to Old Boy. Still, Gantz would probably do a helluva lot better than those Kazuo Umezu books and shojo harlequin books they've been publishing over the last couple of years, so it's nice to know they're not just picking up stuff at random anymore.
Edit: Spoke too soon. Well, ok, the other reason I think it's more of a cult show than Berserk is because it's more about exploitation than story, which is why I compared it to Elfen Lied. Last edited by GATSU on Sun Jul 01, 2007 2:44 pm; edited 2 times in total |

So do most people here recommend Gantz to buy? I have been curious about it and it is in my "want to read" section since I have heard a lot of people wanting it to be licensed over here for a while. I guess this license is good news for a lot of people. And HellKorn, when you say no substance, does that mean the plot? I really love Berserk so I don't mind violence, but if there is nothing except the gore and such then...meh. I don't know if I'd want to invest in it.

Or rather the Elfen Lied is just a puddle of fan service filth, diaper girl and all, that panders to the lolicon audience.
What's the overall critical response to the Ichi the Killer film, by the way? It helps that the Old Boy is well-received, so I'm curious on how a movie tie-in to promote the ItK manga would be.
Dark Horse has been pursuing Gantz for a while, so it's not like they've suddenly woken up to what the fans want (see: Berserk, Trigun, Hellsing, MPD Psycho, etc.). Though I'm not too sure about the Umezu comparison as Lone Wolf and Cub is one of the best-selling non-shonen manga around.
Though Gantz doesn't try to paint itself as anything seperate than what most get the impression of.
Well, I exaggerate somewhat when I say that "Gantz has zero substance." There is some effort to character development and certain themes, and Oku does succeed in a way, but you really read the manga for some of the best, engaging, intense action scenes that you'll find in manga. It's really a wild ride, and you have simply have some really cooky stuff going on. It's good, shameless fun with plot and character development sort of tacked on. I can't gurantee that you'll like it, but give it a try. |

Hellkorn:
Critics in Norway walked out on it. It'd be perfect advertising. It's got a 62% fresh, though, but that's way better than Hostel 2.
Actually, most of those titles only happened, because of the Digital Manga connection. They really have been clueless without Toren.
Lone Wolf and Cub had a bigger fanbase than Umezu, due to Frank Miller and those Shogun Assassin remixes of the movies. |

Finally, Gantz is licensed... not too sure what I think of DH getting it, since I've never had an interest in anything they've released before...
So I guess I'm a DH virgin... we'll see how they do. I'm just glad to finally have it. And yes, while there isn't much substance to it, and what little there is usually takes place between the battles (which means every 60-80 chapters), it's very engaging, imo, and the artwork is gorgeous. |

Gantz is pretty exciting. Though, DH is slow putting stuff out, so it could take forever before you get to any good meat of it.
As for Strain and Sanctuary, I have both of all series, I would try finding them on sites like half.com and amazon market place. I got the last half of Sanctuary on half.com for a good price. Though I would like to see Heat come out stateside, that would be cool. |
