I really enjoy this concept, something about it seems like a more refined version of Children Who Chase Lost Voices (which, unpopular opinion, I actually really liked). I think it's something about "closing doors can refer to tying loose ends or finishing something" relating to loss in CWCLV. I also like how it seems like it might not just be a straight up romance but will incorporate adventure as well (again, like CWCLV). Can't wait to be able to see it!

The Makoto Shinkai cinematic universe continues!

What will this water filled Tokyo lead us to next?

Well I'm getting some vibes similar to Pullman's "His Dark Materials" series, with the door-closing and the doors being a problem for the world. Might be pretty interesting.

Wasn't expecting doors, but okay. Looking forward to seeing what the characters and their dynamics will be like.

Hopefully one of them leads to a restaurant... which ironically is the same as the one physically down the street from the MC anyway...

And with the Children who chase Lost Voices art director, I can bet the art design here will be absolutely gorgous

This might turn out well.

Is the movie unpopular?

While I personally haven't watched CWCLV, the emphasis of adventure in Suzume makes it pretty intriguing.

I'm not sure about unpopular, but generally I see people name it as their least favorite Shinkai film (or just disliking it in general)

Looks good and you know it is going to be set in that same universe as Your Name and Weathering with You. Also I hope his wife and daughter have roles in this one and I hope GKIDS gets the rights for the USA and Oscar season.

Kind of a strange take on a Pandora's Box sort of plot, but Shinkai usually knows what he's doing. I'm surprised it's coming out so soon... even if 2022 still feels like it should be 2 years away.

it's going to be longer for us in the West. The movie will be out in July but an American distributer needs to pick it up, subtitle it, market it, arrange deals to get in theaters, so at best this time next year we get to watch it and at worst March 2023. If we are lucky it will come over for some early screenings at Film Festivals and Anime Conventions.

I'm excited for his new movie, but I know it will be a while.

Fall 2022 is what the article says. July would be way too early, the staff are already struggling with the schedule as far as I have heard.
