There is a community called fandom_counts, being organised as a protest. |

I'm a tad confused on some things.  All I know is that my F-List is just flooded with people warning comms about it since yesterday.

What I find even more disturbing about this is that LJ doesn't even seem to be looking into the communities they're banning. Everything from communities of the Gothic Lolita fashion style to book discussions of the book Lolita are being shut down, all because of that L word.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT DOES NOT APPLY TO PRIVATE COMPANIES.
Sorry, but people pretending that private standards being enforced on private property is a Constitutional issue pisses me off. Your right to say you like loli/yaoi/shota/rape/murder porn/whatever is constitutionally protected. Your right to say it using my computer server is not. |

The 1st Amendment of The Constitution of The United States of America reads, in full: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." Please explain to me how a privately owned company(and by that I mean, not owned by the government) deleting internet journals is a violation of the first amendment. |

I don't see how a privately owned free service deleting accounts is any violation of the first amendment.
Shame that it's deleting innocent groups in the process, though, doesn't seem like they're paying too much attention and just deleting anything related to it. And, while I debated for Nymphet before it got canceled, I do think it's good that they're out deleting some of the stuff that's directly sexual in nature. |

LiveJournal, just like Seven Seas, is a private company...
they're allowed to set rules and prohibit any items and sites that seem inappropriate to their standards... just because there's free speech, you can't hide it behind all day long and put out whatever you want... i don't know how much porn/yaoi/shota material were in those blog channels but if there were enough complaints to warrent such action, then i imagine they were pretty bad enough... |

Ah, but a lot of people have paid accounts at LJ or have paid $150 for a permanent account. That is where some people are getting icky - they don't want to lose an account they've paid that much for and had for years. What a lot of people are also getting concerned about is anything with '-cest' can be deleted. There has been some losses of comms that have only adults in fics that are getting deleted. |

I agree things get dicey there, but your still bound to the rules of LJ (or whatever site) even if your a paying customer. I am a paying member of a certain shooting range, I pay 180 dollar a year to be a member that is allowed to use the range at certain times (along with other benefits) that isn't allowed to non-members. If I break the rules of the range they can (if they choose to) remove me from their range, take away my membership.....all without a refund. Rules are rules. Livejournal is a private company. They're certainly *allowed* to do this.
It also breaks numerous promises from staff (Like the one when they began to allow advertisements, stating over and over again that advertisers would NOT be able to control content, yet caving to this advertisement threat) and goes against the company's long-standing record of allowing virtually unhindered free speech on its services, deleting communities only when legally required to do so. So yeah, their wholesale abandonment of this policy is severely distressing, even if its not a herald of tyranny like when a government does it. And here's hoping user outrage and threatened loss of revenue gets them to shift course, reinstate deleted accounts, et al. 'cause if not, it's annoyingly difficult to back up *everything*. |
