Excellent article! I think it's a common pattern that famous composers at some point move away from what they used to do and try out various different things late in their careers – music for other types of media, live performances, new creative projects, interacting more with fans and so on.

I didn't know about the score for the taiga drama, but I'll definitely check it out.

Yoko Kanno is absolutely brilliant, so I'm glad she's keeping busy, even if it isn't always with anime. I just hope her score for the live-action Cowboy Bebop has a few new pieces alongside some classics from the anime series.

I hope that Yoko Kanno eventually composes more anime soundtracks. She really is one of a kind, and it's tough to even name a handful of other anime composers that reach even close to her level. At least she has kept herself busy doing things that she loves.

The banner image on the main ANN page to link to the Yoko Kanno article says "At 32 years old".

Please fix.
Own ANN entry for Yoko Kanno says born March 18, 1963...

I believe you are misunderstanding the quote.

Quote:
At 32 years old, she composed one of the most iconic anime soundtracks in history. Now two decades later, what is the famed Yoko Kanno up to?

Cowboy Bebop premiered on TV in 1998, when Kanno was 35, however music production on the series itself happened first, years earlier as the series was being developed.

I'd add 'Vision of Escaflowne' as a 'third seminal soundtrack'. I don't think ever seen a TV series with better incidental music.

She's probably the only anime OST composer where I could just listen to her music for itself. I must have spent thousands of hours just listening to The Vision of Escaflowne, Macross Plus, and Macross Frontier.

I've always admired Kanno because she's such a versatile composer but it seems that the few things she's done in the last few years just don't have the visceral impact of say-Escaflowne or Cowboy Bebop. Hope she starts cooking with gas soon and returns to at least some of her former prominence.

Yeah I kind of feel the same way. Although Terror in Resonance was really good. Up there with Escaflowne, Macross Plus and Bebop and Arjuna for me.

Her Song to Fly album was also great!

I don't recall how involved she was with Ghost in the Shell StandAlone Complex, but there are some amazing pieces there as well.

She made me love soundtracks! I'm looking forward to what she does for Netflix, regardless of how the show turns out.

Typo?

Should that be "preceeded"?

PS, I prefer this version of "TANK" from the Session Starducks, with the opening spoken part included: https://youtu.be/mzDu7E6E-og

My preferred song is "Moon", the "Turn A Concert" version with Origa as singer instead of 'Gabriella Robin' as singer.
