Quote: | But in Greek the word “xeno” means “alien” or “stranger,” and it's the root of the term “xenophobia,” or fear/dislike of foreigners. |
... And it's also the root of the term "xenophilia", love for foreigners. I mean, sure, it's clear there will be lots of trouble for Bell and the monsters this season, but you said yourself that "xenos" means "stranger", so why look for another meaning for the name of that new race?

In modern Greek, xeno can also mean "guest", as in the words for guesthouse, xenónas and hotel, xenodocheio.

I wasn't looking for another meaning, I was pointing out the best-known use of "xeno" in modern English. (Sadly, people use xenophilia far less.) Trust me, I know both words and I'm current with the novels' official releases; I'm trying to write for anime-only fans as well as those who are LN readers, and we're still at the "phobia" portion of the story.
@Netero
I love how language evolves! I was looking at the word in the strictly older (possibly antiquated?) sense because of the gods and the pseudo-Medieval setting of the story, but I really like knowing that.

It seems odd that this is probably the first time they show Bell using Argonaut, not in tandem with Firebolt. I get why he didn't do so for the purposes of the plot (as doing so would result in the lizardfolk, and probably most of the other xenos incinerated), but it's still kind of odd that this is the first time he's shown using it for a non-empowered firebolt.

Another fun fact about the term Xenos, Xenos is also the base term behind the noble gas Xenon, as it was considered to be an "alien gas", due to it having such a small presence within the Earth's atmosphere, and theorizing that it wasn't naturally occurring from earth

my real curiousity AND MAJOR CONCERN is the opening theme!
after building up the bell/ais shipping in season 2, it would really suck if this arc ended it!
but from the way she was looking at the scales of the one eye dragon in season 2, as a massive shipper i am really concerned that a conflict will end up happening due to her obvious hatred for monsters and bell's desire to protect wiene!
i hope that its not the case!

^I can see the scenario you are worried about coming up, but in Ais' defense, she seems like an intelligent person who forms her own opinions rather than just accepting the prevailing popularly acceptable view, so I'd bet Bell helps her over that "speed bump". However, I for one hope not to see the SS Wallenstein in Orario's port again. It was a cute gimmick in S1 but got old quickly and as the story moves into more dramatic territory with more eligible and frankly interesting girls, it seems really out of place. I don't think the story ever made a compelling argument for why Bell was so "in love" with Ais other than dumb infatuation, but he has at least Hestia and Lili with a lot more relationship "mileage" on him than Ais. And I can't think of a single clue that Ais even thinks of him romantically, she barely seems to "like" him.

Ais doesn't have a big role in this side of the arc, but she will appear. (Her role is - probably not surprisingly - bigger in the Sword Oratoria side of these events.)
Whether or not Bell is genuinely in love with Ais (or even truly infatuated with her) is a matter for debate. He more sees her as the ideal, the goal that he is striving for in terms of ability; a high school athlete idolizing a pro in his sport is probably an apt comparison. Hestia is the one that is seeing romance there.
As for what Ais thinks of him? The content that has been animated so far in both the main series and Sword Oratoria offers little clue; the content which deals mostly deeply with that is what comes immediately after this arc on the Sword Oratoria side. It's important to remember that Ais is at least as singularly-focused on getting stronger as Bell is and she's a mental space cadet about anything which doesn't involve that or fighting monsters, so she doesn't have a concept of romance. She's fascinated by how fast Bell is growing and there has been some suggestion that Bell reminds her of her father, and she probably regards him as a friend, but at this point that's as far as it goes.

Not really. In the climax of season 1 against the Black Goliath he used Argonaut with a sword to take out the upper half of its body and again when he fought Aisha in season 2. The Firebolt he used to beat her wasnt powered up with Argonaut.

And now things are escalating to the darkest part of the arc

Yep. Given some of the trims the adaptation has made so far, it might skip one certain part of the next scene, and I actually hope that it does.
I was very much impressed with how this episode was handled. Nearly all talking, and yet none of it felt like wasted time.

@Princess_Irene- Just love your making the parallel between Shylock and the Xenos. That little monologue is one of the most powerful in literature if you ask me, and the plight of the Xenos and indeed some of the Hestians resonates with that quite well. The possibility of cross-reincarnation is a great idea and I'm excited to see how it plays. The really interesting part will be in how Bell interacts with Ais on the point...

That thought definitely crossed my mind as well when he started talking about some Xenos born with the ability to speak and some without. The idea was tempered a bit when Ouranos talked about human (and other races) souls returning to the afterlife & reincarnated and this just being a monster life & reincarnation cycle, but it's definitely possible that both could be happening. Perhaps some humanoid souls don't make it out of the dungeon and get "stuck" in the monster cycle.
It's also possible that Lyd in a previous life was just a monster that either made it to the surface before the tower was built or brought above for a monsterphilia or something. Though it's interesting that in either case his soul would have still returned to the dungeon, presuming that memory was shortly before death.

They're even crossing over from other series, what with Daphne's unicorn murder bunnies (Re: Zero) hanging out with the Xenos.

No offense to you personally, but I'm getting a bit tired of this joke since those monsters have literally been in Danmachi since season 1 in 2015. I mean, come on, if we're gonna reference murder bunnies, Monty Python is a thing, lol.
