One death in Hokkaido due to COVID-19: http://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/13166393
For those of us planning on travelling to Japan for live events, travel insurance will *not* cover pandemics or entering countries with a "Do Not Travel" advisory. (As always check the insurance policy's Product Disclosure Statement). For travel insurance that I've used, cancellation of an event that is the principal reason for travel *is* covered. So an event would have to be cancelled/postponed before any declaration of a pandemic for me to be covered. Last edited by omiya on Wed Feb 26, 2020 8:35 am; edited 1 time in total |

Some of these events people have probably been looking forward to for months, and have spent a lot of money to get tickets. And the organisers spent a lot of money on it. I know these may be necessary sacrifices, but it doesn't make it any easier to bear. I know because I was looking forward to Anime Japan this year....

Pretty soon, ANN’s going to need a beat writer just to cover event cancellations.

What is omitted in this article, strangely, is that the JP Government made an announcement Wednesday morning to the public to not hold large events the next two weeks...???! How can you cover Japan news on events and not report this? (Or mention the fact that while Wednesday's concert in Tokyo Dome was cancelled, Perfume did the same show on Tuesday in Tokyo Dome? LOL.)
https://twitter.com/jijicom/status/1232511125574516737 This is the reason behind all the cancellation starting from today for the next two weeks If you really want to fearmonger, some venues have reported that covid-19 patients have visited them, that prompts cancellation as well. You should start calling it SARS-CoV-2. That's the official name now.

The policy statement is an extension of one the Tokyo Metropolitan Government made last Friday, which ANN reported:
animenewsnetwork.com/news/2020-02-22/ghibli-museum-closes-on-february-25-march-17-due-to-covid-19-coronavirus-concerns/.156751 ANN also posted about concerts being cancelled after a person with COVID-19 went to a previous concert: animenewsnetwork.com/news/2020-02-25/rock-band-wanima-cancels-2-events-after-covid-19-coronavirus-patient-attends-concert/.156839

SARS-CoV-2 is the current name of the virus, while COVID-19 is the current name of the disease it causes. https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019 |

Read your own reporting versus what NHK and others are saying. I think there is a misunderstanding on your end. https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20200226_28/ https://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2020/02/26/anime-events-and-concerts-get-canceled-in-japan-as-new-measures-against-the-coronavirus-come-into-effect https://english.kyodonews.net/news/2020/02/4d5ff5744493-urgent-abe-asks-big-event-organizers-to-mull-cancelations-for-next-2-weeks.html https://www.forexlive.com/news/!/japan-pm-abe-to-request-cancellation-delay-downsizing-of-sports-cultural-events-20200226 |

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government already asked big event organizers on Friday to mull cancelations for the next three weeks: https://www.seisakukikaku.metro.tokyo.lg.jp/news/pdf/event.pdf |

Yes I am aware of that pdf. How do you read it to be? My understanding was that the policy release from last week deals with events sponsored by Tokyo government, and only asks private events to reconsider. The announcement from Wednesday comes directly from Abe, on TV, and is a direct plea to private events. It certainly would explain why Perfume decided to cancel on Wednesday hours before the live despite having the same show in the same venue just the day before. But I am not "the most trusted source" of any kind so I recommend you get someone who knows Japanese enough to report on Japanese government news items to confirm. It is very odd that you state this is simply a continuation when none of the mainstream English sources reported it as such. But anyways, this is for the public good to better couch your reporting and not for my own benefit, I can get my news elsewhere. That's not the case for everyone. |

Both the Tokyo Meropoltian Government's policy statement on Friday and the Japanese national government's proposed policy statement on Wednesday "urged" events to "consider." In both cases, it's non-binding. In the case of the Wednesday one, it has yet to be formalized. http://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/13165755 |

There are a number of things, from what you have written here and in the articles you linked, that are probably worth reexamining by you. The articles I have linked explains all the differences, other than that you seem to equate a Tokyo metro policy (city-level) to a statement by the Prime Minister (national). Yes, it's not binding, read the links I have provided, they explain everything in English. I think the Crunchyroll article that I linked is an example of responsible reporting on the event cancellations since this Wednesday morning Japan time. The way you have written it is borderline misleading by omission. |

The key is the Tokyo Metropolitan Government policy statement Friday is a formalization of a Japanese national government proposal -- one that was extended by Abe's one-sentence message Wednesday: https://www.mhlw.go.jp/stf/seisakunitsuite/newpage_00002.html
Keep in mind that the linked article claimed "the first death not connected to the Diamond Princess Cruise Ship" happened only on Wednesday. The first death in Japan not connected to the Diamond Princess happened two weeks ago: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20200213_50/ |
