Heartbreaking to hear. The CG animation is easily the worst part of the series. Sucks to hear it was actually going to be normal animation before executive meddling.

I disagree with the other comment, to a degree. It is the "worst part" of the anime but it's really not that bad. I stopped noticing it in the first episode. Unlike the new Ultraman CGI anime, there's no real bad FPS or anything weird that actually distracts me from enjoying the show...God..UItraman's FPS is atrocious at times. Everything in High Score Girl looks really solid and the faces are great

I like the CG for the most part. Makes oono's angry expression so cute.

The answer is simple they made CGI because it was easier... There is simply no way CGI would look better then normal animation...

This is one of the few series where the CG didn't really bother me. Guess that since it is more of a SoL series, there aren't many scenes of quick movement. That's not to say there were no issues with how the characters moved, just that it didn't bother me as much as other series.
Still, CG aside, loved the story and I'm looking forward to the 2nd season. I hope this series eventually comes out on disc, just don't know what would be involved for that to happen. Still have to watch the OVAs on Netflix...but, since they have the rights to it, I'm not in too much of a rush, as season 2 will probably come out in 2020 on Netflix. |

The CG is why I didn't watch it. So yeah this sucks.

I am still convinced CGI is just not suited for animated shows due to the lack of "smear frames" since the 3D renders have to physically travel the distance, it adds this 'uncanny' quality to the movements that normal animation doesn't have due to techniques like smear frames. And don't forget that the lighting and shadows of 3D objects will always look different compared to 2D animations, thus adding to the 'uncanniness'

That's interesting to hear. I didn't know that the show was made in CGI until I watched the first episode, I thought it was 2D until I payed attention to the way the characters moved. I'm really impressed, most other CGI anime still looks very weird to me, the shows themselves are fine but the animation is so much more fluid than 2D animation that it does not "feel" like anime to me, they kinda of look like cutscenes from a video game.
I guess the animation in Hi Score Girl works better (at least for me) because it isn't an action show like the new Ultraman, Cyborg 009 Call of Justice, or most of Polygon Pictures shows. The show does have some cartoony action and comedy scenes, but it mostly involves the main characters playing video games so they don't move too much. |

Animation smearing and other techniques used in traditional hand-drawn 2D animation can be done in 3D. See Disney's Paperman short, which uses 3D and 2D animation elements pretty effectively. Unfortunately this requires time and money, ingredients that are often absent from anime production. I see a lot more ugly 3D "anime" in the future. About the only TV series I can think of that I thought looked pretty good was Land of the Lustrous. |

Disappointing to hear as I very much would have watched this series if it wasn't fully 3D animated.

I thought this show was adorable and the CG didn't bother me at all, especially considering the art style and slice of life/romance genre.
Like, I won't defend Berserk 2016, but I feel like people get too strong of a knee jerk reaction to any CG anime at all. |

Hi Score Girl was a show that looked good and the use of CGI made sense given the number of arcade games. That the staff even tracked down arcade cabinets from junk dealers to model them for the show is impressive. While I do admire 2D animation I don't see a problem with CGI and there is a growing number of anime shows which have used it well.

One could make the argument attempting to make CG anime move and look more like regular anime might be a pointless task because you could just make it regular anime if you wanted that aesthetic. Paperman attempting to emulate traditional animation is notable because traditional animated movies do not exist in America anymore, so it's an attempt at finding a way to adapt in the modern American industry which doesn't have the option of simply making your movie 2D like Japan does. In that regard, I would definitely prefer the Paperman approach to modern Disney CG films, but I would still prefer the 2D style of their 90s films over it. CG generally puts me off from watching an anime. Even the ones people swear by like Houseki no Kuni I still find unappealing to watch and would much rather have them be traditionally animated. |

Not an anime CGI fan but Hi Score Girl does a good job with it.
Ono & Hikada expressions are well done. I guess you just have to get used to it. |

right, land of the lustrous was tolerable because they weren't trying to make it look like your typical anime style, and did it's own thing. The only other 3D animation that I could consider passable would be Roosterteeth's RWBY
